Assassin’s Creed Shadows Can’t Stop the Ubisoft Rot of Star Wars Outlaws and XDefiant

As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that Assassin’s Creed Shadows was an absolute blast to play, but digging into Ubisoft’s financial reports from last year, it’s clear that the game’s success didn’t quite compensate for the setbacks in other areas.

Many people, including us, anticipated this result, but the numbers are nevertheless quite concerning. The publishing company ended up with a loss of approximately €159 million, and their annual revenue dropped by 17.5%.

Launched in August 2024, Star Wars Outlaws faced difficulty in generating sales despite having a substantial development budget and an extensive promotional campaign covering a broad range of markets. The game soon emerged as a notable contributor to Ubisoft’s recent downturn, causing concern within the company, with shareholders considering potential takeovers.

Initially, XDefiant, released in May of the previous year, struggled to gain traction. Whispers of its impending closure started circulating shortly after launch. Eventually, Ubisoft officially announced that they would be closing down the game in June of this current year.

2021 posed numerous difficulties for Ubisoft, according to CEO Yves Guillemot. The company’s portfolio has experienced varying trends, all while contending with fierce competition within the gaming industry.

Currently, Ubisoft finds itself in a position where it needs to heavily invest in its most recognized franchises, and Assassin’s Creed appears to be the preferred choice for this endeavor. Reports indicate that Ubisoft is planning a series of games spanning approximately six years, encompassing open-world RPGs and complete remakes. The success of Shadows will undoubtedly provide an impetus for this approach as well.

As a gamer, I’m also excited about the prospect of diving into action-packed adventures with games like Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and (fingers crossed) Splinter Cell!

Ubisoft has openly acknowledged that several large-scale productions are underway at the moment, and to guarantee their successful completion, the company is implementing internal delays. They believe that this strategy positively impacted the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

What’s your take on Ubisoft’s potential future? Could it potentially recover financially by focusing heavily on its most popular franchises? I’m curious to hear your thoughts in the comment section.
