In a recent interview with creative director Jonathan Dumont, it was clarified that Assassin’s Creed Shadows does not penalize players for preferring one character over another.
In a chat with Screen Rant, Dumont discusses the intricate mechanics of character swapping in Shadow’s gameplay, offering insights into how this feature is integrated within the game’s overall design. Although details about this aspect have previously been shared in promotional materials, it remains engaging to hear the director’s perspective.
To begin with, Shadows features two playable characters situated at the game’s outset: Naoe, who excels in stealth tactics as a shinobi, and Yasuke, renowned for his combative prowess as a samurai. As you traverse the expansive open world, feel free to switch between them whenever you like. Each character boasts unique skill sets, equipment options, combat styles, and parkour abilities.
Instead of continually switching characters, Dumont notes that the game is designed to adjust according to your chosen character. Most story missions and quests offer a choice in character selection.
In essence, Dumont believes that it’s perfectly fine for you to prefer one character over another without feeling like you’re missing out significantly on the overall gaming experience. He further suggests that you should simply enjoy the game in the manner that suits you best.
As a gamer, I often immerse myself in different characters, spending a couple of hours exploring their unique traits before it’s time to switch things up. Sometimes I’ll opt for stealthy approaches, whispering “Gotcha!” as I sneak past guards undetected. Then, the urge strikes me – it’s time for some good old-fashioned camp destruction! After a while of wreaking havoc, I switch characters like flipping channels on a TV.
It’s worth mentioning that particular sections within Shadows require players to adopt a specific main character. As the director clarifies, these characters are individually introduced, and subsequently, each has their unique storyline or quest.
Naoe and Yasuke are separate characters in the game, meaning you can’t follow Naoe’s personal questline if you’re playing as Yasuke. However, the main part of the game allows you to choose any character, and the gameplay adapts accordingly.
In theory, the dual-lead approach could offer Shadows some appealing replayability, especially for those committed to one style of play. However, considering games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as a reference, Shadows might turn out to be quite an extensive game.
Should you decide to favor one character over the other while playing, or do you aim for a fair distribution of gameplay between them? Feel free to share your chosen strategy in the comments below.
