As a seasoned gamer with countless hours logged in various action-adventure games under my belt, I must say that the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has me genuinely intrigued and excited. The prospect of playing as two distinct protagonists, each with their unique specialties, is a fresh take on the series and presents an interesting challenge.
As a gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating diving into the world of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows.” In this game, I’ll be assuming the roles of two distinct characters: samurai Yasuke, who leans more towards raw power and combat, and shinobi Naoe, who excels in stealth and swift maneuvers. Recently, Ubisoft has given us a peek into the combat aspect of “Shadows,” complementing their earlier insights into its stealth mechanics.
Specifically, new information has been shared on how both protagonists will function in combat, and the key changes you can expect across their play styles. As far as the basics are concerned, of course, you can expect several similarities. Both characters will make use of light and heavy attacks, as well as a new mechanic called Posture Attacks, which are essentially charged versions of either light or heavy attacks. Unlike Naoe, Yasuke can also charge his Posture Attacks with his weapon still in the sheath.
In a nutshell, both characters possess the ability to evade attacks, but they execute their evasion techniques differently. Yasuke performs a dodge-step maneuver, whereas Naoe, who’s exceptionally agile, opts for rolls instead. Due to Yasuke’s substantial build, he experiences short recovery periods following each second consecutive dodge-step. However, his heavy armor provides him with an edge in endurance, enabling him to withstand fights for a longer duration, even against multiple adversaries. On the other hand, Naoe seldom resorts to combat as it’s not typically his preferred choice of action.
Yasuke has the ability to deflect incoming attacks momentarily leaving opponents exposed for a counterattack and sometimes absorbing damage with blocks. In contrast, Naoe uses her skill to dodge blows, making enemies expose their sides and potentially putting herself at risk from other attackers. However, neither of them can avoid enemy vulnerabilities during extended periods as they both have brief windows where they can make perfect dodges, causing enemies to become vulnerable.
Moreover, Ubisoft has disclosed information about the abilities that can be gained by both characters, Yasuke and Naoe, along with details on various types of enemies found within the game and the diverse strategies those enemies might use during battle. Learn more about it here.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is due out on February 14 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
