The top-tier combatants understand the importance of patience, mirroring the team behind Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it appears. As one of the most eagerly awaited games of 2024, its release was initially scheduled for Valentine’s Day this year, then shifted to March 20th only two weeks ago. Despite fan dismay over the delays pushing the game into 2025, we had a chance to converse with some of the creators who explained that this extended development period proved invaluable for polishing and fine-tuning the game.

View Urgent ForecastDuring a preview of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, creative director Jonathan Dumont explained that the delays in release were actually advantageous for the game. Although it meant a longer wait for players, the extra time allowed Assassin’s Creed Shadows to improve and reach its full potential.
He stated that overall, everyone found it advantageous. The team was delighted to have some additional time to refine and fix issues with our combat system. Certain aspects, such as readability in combat, stealth, AI, and parkour needed improvements, especially in games like Assassin’s Creed where parkour allows for climbing on various objects. There are specific guidelines to consider when tweaking parkour. The goal is to make it more seamless.
In a discussion, the game director for “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, named Chris Benoit, addressed the game’s recent postponement and elaborated on the improvements made during that period.
Benoit mentioned that with the additional time, we focused primarily on improving the progression in our project. To enhance its appeal and clarity, we rearranged some elements, and more importantly, worked on finding the right balance since fine-tuning a game like this can be quite lengthy. Overall, it proved to be very beneficial for this purpose.
Alongside speaking with ComicBook, Dumont and Benoit shared that the game’s team adjusted elements based on player feedback for authenticity. For instance, players suggested what should or shouldn’t be included in a shrine. Regarding parkour, Benoit concurred with Dumont, stating that the team focused on making Japanese architecture navigation feel seamless and fluid by fine-tuning collision and animations. Given that parkour is integral to the series, they strive for continual refinement.
Delays in video game production are relatively common, though they’ve become less frequent in recent times. These delays might seem frustrating to fans eagerly awaiting the release of a particular title, but they provide developers with more time to smooth out rough edges, polish, and perfect their work. Games like The Last of Us Part 2, God of War, Halo Infinite, and Elden Ring are examples of titles that experienced delays. However, delays can sometimes be a two-edged sword: on one hand, they allow for more refinement; on the other, hype may dwindle or the game might not yet be ready for release. Examples of this include Cyberpunk 2077, the Saints Row Remake, Battlefield 2042, and Fast & Furious Crossroads.
From what the developers have shared, it appears that many of the improvements made to Assassin’s Creed Shadows address concerns raised by fans. For instance, the combat system, which has been a topic of debate given the distinct playstyles of Naoe (stealth-focused) and Yasuke (action-oriented), may have received adjustments. Although we’ll need to see more to fully appreciate the refinements, the gameplay deep dive in December was generally praised by fans compared to the initial reveal, which some found a bit slow.
The secrets will come to light once Assassin’s Creed Shadows is released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on March 20th.
