Following the discussion on stealth, combat, and navigation, Ubisoft highlighted another crucial element of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in a recent blog post: Exploration. Game director Charles Benoit confirmed that the game’s world map will display only region names and sketches hinting at locations. As you delve into exploration, additional details and hidden points of interest will be uncovered, much like in Ghost of Tsushima.
Benoit explained that instead of overly guiding the player with icons or markers, we aimed to create a world that’s rich with information as a form of incentive. In this game, where you play a shinobi, the quest for information becomes part of the struggle itself.
In the game ‘Shadows‘, you’ll have to search and gather information, either through your network of spies, interactions with non-player characters, or simply paying attention to your surroundings. Essentially, we aim for players to uncover our hidden gems at their own pace, by investigating, using their spy network, or by being observant.
Instead of being called synchronization points, they are now referred to as Viewpoints. Instead of displaying a large portion of the map, they highlight points of interest nearby. By using the “Observe” feature, players can hover over these areas and label them appropriately (with commonly known locations displaying their names). Unlike previous action RPGs, there is no eagle companion in this game; instead, you must personally move around and explore things on your own using the “Observe” function.
Perspectives serve as quick transportation options, but it’s essential to stay vigilant – certain locations, such as tenshu, might be directly surrounded by adversaries. Of course, Naoe and Yasuke employ distinct strategies to reach each perspective (Naoe having an advantage due to her agility).
Additionally, there are covert hideaways or sanctuaries, which function as mini-extensions of your ninja lair. These serve as convenient spots to retrieve equipment, review and accept missions, replenish tools and ammunition, manage summoned allies, and more. Unlike your main hideout, these areas remain enemy-free, making them a safer choice for quick travel.
The game titled “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” is set to release on March 20th, available for play on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC platforms following a further postponement. Keep an eye out for updates regarding its exciting exploration aspects soon.
