As a seasoned Assassin’s Creed enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the latest revelation about “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” has piqued my interest. Having navigated through the branching narratives of Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for this new installment. The promise of a core narrative that leans more towards the journey than the choices is intriguing, especially given my occasional frustration with the divisive nature of branching dialogue.
In a recent Reddit AMA, Jonathan Dumont, creative director for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, indicated that the main storyline will resemble that of Origins/Odyssey and Valhalla. However, he clarified that the impact of player choices on the core narrative will be more limited compared to Odyssey.
In a subsequent remark, Dumont pointed out that decisions arise when “building alliances” or strengthening relationships with specific characters. Since branching dialogues often lead to differing opinions among fans, there will be an available Canon Mode. This mode enables players to enjoy the game without making choices, providing a choice-less experience instead.
The narrative should eliminate any confusion regarding its overarching storyline. Furthermore, player choices won’t be compulsory to adhere to the established plot (avoiding issues like the controversial DLC from Odyssey, specifically Legacy of the First Blade). Ultimately, we don’t yet know how characters such as Naoe and Yasuke will conclude their stories.
On Valentine’s Day, 2025, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to release for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms. Latest updates on the game’s combat include insights into the unique weapons each character wields, their skills, and the types of foes they will encounter.
