As an analyst with over two decades of experience in the gaming industry, I can appreciate Ubisoft’s decision to delay Assassin’s Creed Shadows for a more polished experience. Having seen many games launch with glaring issues due to rushed releases, it’s refreshing to see a company prioritize quality over timely delivery. The added bonus of the first expansion for free is an attractive incentive for preorders, and I believe it will pay off in the long run.

Ubisoft’s next big game is getting pushed out the year.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been moved up from its initial November 2024 schedule to February 14, 2024.

According to Ubisoft’s announcement, this upcoming expansion for the franchise is an ambitious project that offers a deep, immersive journey seen from the perspectives of two distinct characters. However, they acknowledge that additional time is required to perfect and enhance several key aspects of the experience.

Initially planned for release on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (via Uplay), PlayStation 5, Mac, Amazon Luna, and soon on Steam, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is now making its way to Steam on launch day. Previously placed preorders will be refunded, and any new preorders will receive the game’s initial expansion at no extra cost. Ubisoft is transitioning away from the season pass model for this title.

This setback is additionally due to the fact that Ubisoft’s latest release for Star Wars Outlaws didn’t perform as well as they anticipated.

Two open-world Japanese adventures in the same year

This delay results in Assassin’s Creed Shadows being released in the same year as another extensive open-world game, both taking place in Japan.

In 2025, Ghost of Yōtei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima developed by PlayStation Studios in collaboration with Sucker Punch Productions, is expected to be released for PlayStation 5. The game introduces a new protagonist named Atsu who assumes the role and disguise of the legendary ghost Jin Sakai. At this moment, we don’t have much information about the storyline.

It’s quite possible that these games will be released with a gap of several months in between, and this timing is worth noting, considering the extensive period typically required for developing major video games.
