Assassin’s Creed Shadows – Playtesters Getting Confused Led to Use of Yellow Paint in the Game

Ever since its debut in March, “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” has garnered a lot of positive attention, with its stealth gameplay and expansive open world being among the aspects applauded. However, some players have raised a small concern regarding the open-world game’s use of yellow paint to mark ledges for parkour movements.

During an interview with GamesRadar, creative director Jonathan Dumont explained that the game incorporates bright yellow markings to help players easily identify ledges and platforms suitable for parkour maneuvers at a glance. Interestingly, he mentioned that earlier versions of Assassin’s Creed Shadows didn’t include this yellow paint detail. Instead, it was introduced later in response to playtesters getting mixed up about which surfaces were safe for parkour movements.

Dumont mentioned, “You know, the game feature wasn’t present initially as players found it challenging to navigate through hidden paths during playtesting. To make the experience more enjoyable, we decided to subtly guide them a bit in this dense, rich environment.

It’s no wonder that interactive or jumpable objects in video games began to be highlighted using markers like yellow paint, given that visuals in gaming started becoming increasingly realistic over time. This trend can be traced back to some of the earliest PlayStation 4 releases and even affected older Assassin’s Creed games. For instance, Assassin’s Creed 2 used white cloth to signal an object that could initiate a parkour trail.

Additionally, it was disclosed last month that Assassin’s Creed Shadows had been postponed several times prior to its launch. However, the additional time wasn’t utilized for extensive modifications to the game. Instead, the developers optimized the extra time given by meticulously polishing the game to the best of their ability.

Dumont mentioned that our main goal was to create a game as refined and polished as possible. He added that the reason for the delays was to ensure the game had no glitches and provided a smooth, bug-free experience for players.

During the delays, some additional elements were incorporated into the game, primarily character interaction scenes that provided deeper insights into their relationships. He mentioned, “We already had a few of these, and they were well-received. So, why not enhance them a bit more?

The action-adventure game titled “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” was launched on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 20th. Since then, it has shown remarkable success, as evidenced by its status as the top-selling game in terms of dollar sales during the week of its release in the United States. In fact, it ranks second among the year’s biggest game launches, trailing only “Monster Hunter Rise,” which recently marked a significant milestone with 10 million copies sold.
