As a gamer with over two decades of gaming history under my belt, I must say that the inclusion of Crash Bandicoot in Astro Bot is a delightful surprise! Back when I was just a young lad, my first PlayStation was adorned with the iconic Crash logo and those early games were a significant part of my childhood. The fact that this once-Sony mascot is now making an appearance on PlayStation 5, albeit under different ownership, feels like a full-circle moment in gaming history.
Next month, “Astro Bot” will arrive on PlayStation 5 with VIP and Cameo Bots, many of which incorporate references to famous Sony-owned characters. However, it’s worth noting that not all characters in the game are owned by Sony. In fact, PlayStation announced today that Crash Bandicoot, who is actually an Xbox-owned character, will also appear in the game. Although an official image of a Bot dressed as Crash hasn’t been released yet, Nicolas Doucet, the studio director from Team Asobi, has hinted at his appearance on the PlayStation Blog. In this blog post, Doucet discussed the difficulties they faced when adapting these characters in the Astro Bot style.
Doucet explained that they aimed to give the characters a stylish sci-fi look while incorporating elements like fabric and furry boots. However, this sometimes felt like a departure from the original character’s essence. To resolve this, they opted for more natural materials like hair instead of traditional ones. Moreover, the eyes were crucial in all these designs. LED eyes didn’t always suit certain characters due to their original design relying heavily on specific pupil sizes or colors. For cartoon VIPs such as Crash Bandicoot and Ape Escape, the Bots wear masks to address this issue with eye proportions.
Originally, Crash Bandicoot served as a symbol for PlayStation during its inception, with his early games exclusively available on the platform, being developed by Naughty Dog, who were under Sony’s ownership at the time. Despite this, the rights to Crash Bandicoot weren’t held by Sony. Over time, the character expanded to other platforms like Nintendo and Microsoft systems. Most recently, Crash Bandicoot was acquired by Activision, which was taken over by Xbox last year.
It’s been verified that Crash Bandicoot is joining Astro Bot, and it’s possible that Spyro the Dragon might show up too. Spyro was quite popular during PlayStation’s early years, and he’s currently under Xbox’s ownership. Although nothing has been officially announced yet, if there’s a collaboration between PlayStation and Xbox (or Activision before the acquisition), it seems likely that Spyro will make an appearance as well. Astro Bot is scheduled for release on September 6th, so we won’t have long to see if these rumors come true!
