As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve played countless games and have grown accustomed to the evolution of technology and game design. Yet, Team Asobi’s upcoming title, Astro Bot, has truly piqued my interest.
Team Asobi’s “Astro Bot” game is nearly ready to be released in just under two months. This project is far more extensive than “Astro’s Playroom,” as indicated by the significant expansion in levels, approximately 12 to 15 hours of gameplay (in contrast to “Playroom’s” 4 to 5 hours), and the collection of over 300 Bots. Additionally, the developers underwent an engine overhaul.
As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news from Nicolas Doucet, the studio head and creative director, who recently spoke with Julien Chièze on YouTube (translation via DeepL). He revealed that there’s been a significant change within our team’s engine. In simpler terms, this means Astro Bot will have an enhanced visual appeal and more intricate physics than its predecessor, Astro’s Playroom. It’s not immediately noticeable, but when compared side by side, the difference will be quite remarkable.
Doucet explained that the game makes use of the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback when players discover hidden passages. By touching certain walls, the texture can change from smooth to bumpy and back, allowing the haptic feedback to simulate different textures. “Feel this? It’s rough. Press it to uncover a secret passage, just like in Indiana Jones or Uncharted.”
Using the Dualsense controller instead of regular vibrations, Doucet believes, enhances the experience to something more enchanting than just “primitive.”
Starting September 6th, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be able to get my hands on “Astro Bot” for $60 on my new PS5. With over 80 stages and more than 70 distinct enemy types, not to mention the 15+ new abilities for our brave astronaut protagonist, this game promises an immersive and exciting experience.
