Astro Bot is the “Most Exciting Recent Success” for PlayStation – SIE head of Studio Business Group

Sony has expressed its delight following the success of Astro Bot in the past, and recently, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, Hermen Hulst, reaffirmed this joy. During a PlayStation business update, Hulst labeled Astro Bot as one of the “most thrilling recent triumphs” for PlayStation.

Hulst praised Astro Bot, stating that it was a massive success, earning widespread praise from both players and critics, and dominating award shows in the industry,” he said about the critically-acclaimed platformer, which debuted as an exclusive for PS5 in September 2024. During the business update, Hulst also mentioned Astro Bot as a growing franchise, since three games have been released with the character as the main focus thus far.

Apart from his other remarks, he additionally expressed a desire to develop more games similar to “Astro Bot” in the coming days. He described its future as a lasting and distinguished video game series for PlayStation, as reported by the user Genki_JPN.

Sony executive Hiroki Totoki previously showed equal excitement about Astro Bot and Helldivers 2 in February, commending both games for being nominated in various categories at The Game Awards 2024.

At The Game Awards 2024, our in-house game Astro Bot took home a total of four awards, which included Game of the Year and Best Family Game – more than any other title, according to Totoki.

Moreover, the real-time multiplayer game ‘Helldivers 2’, launched in February of last year, was honored with both Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer Game accolades. It’s encouraging that games similar to those we aim to develop, such as family-friendly titles and live service games, have been recognized in this way. This is a significant step forward in our goal of creating a diverse catalog of popular titles.

Astro Bot saw impressive sales figures soon after its debut, as Sony announced in November 2024 that they had sold over 1.5 million copies of the 3D platformer within the game’s initial nine weeks on the market.

Following its debut, the creators of Astro Bot have shared some fascinating insights about the game. For instance, creative director Nicolas Doucet disclosed during an interview in March that the popular VIP Bot levels were initially designed as mini-levels.

Doucet mentioned that the [VIP Stage], which had originally been conceived as a small stage, ended up growing quite substantially. He clarified that it’s certainly not small anymore.

It’s worth noting that Doucet mentioned his astonishment over the impressive reception given to the VR game, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which marked the debut of the Astro Bot series.

Speaking as a passionate fan, I’d put it like this: “Working on Astro Bot Rescue Mission was an incredible journey for me because we didn’t go into it with any set goals or expectations. Instead, our focus was on pushing the boundaries of what VR could achieve. We wanted to create something exceptional, to demonstrate the potential of VR and unleash as many innovative ideas as we could.” – Doucet.

You can play ‘Astro Bot’ on your PlayStation 5! Interestingly, it comes included in a package deal along with the console itself. For a comprehensive look at this game, be sure to read our review.
