Astro Bot Rescue Mission’s Success Was a Surpise for the Development Team – Game Director

It seems that the exclusive platformer game for PlayStation VR, titled “Astro Bot Rescue Mission”, turned out to be financially profitable. In a discussion with ex-PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida on Game Maker’s Notebook, its director, Nicolas Doucet, admitted that the team was taken aback by the game’s success, as they didn’t anticipate it themselves.

Doucet expressed how fantastic the project was due to its creation without any preconceived notions, referring to the exciting exploration and innovation that the studio experienced during the development of “Astro Bot Rescue Mission“. The goal was simply to produce the finest version of the prototype, while demonstrating VR’s capabilities in various aspects. They were striving to generate as many unique ideas as possible.

He went on to say, “I never thought it would turn out to be such a lucrative game, and we’d even win some accolades. It turned out to be quite delightful.

Doucet also discussed their work on the upcoming Astro Bot game titled Astro’s Playroom. Since this title will be a complimentary game included digitally with every PS5, the studio utilized the console’s distinctive features like adaptive triggers and the haptic feedback on the DualSense controller.

“We made some demos once again and showed them to the world, same kind of thing,” said Doucet.

In a chat with Famitsu, he also shared a tidbit: The VIP Stages of Astro Bot, which are popular for their appearances of characters from iconic PlayStation series such as Kratos and Ape Escape monkeys, were initially intended to be smaller stages instead.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission served as the introduction for this particular franchise, launching in 2018 exclusively on the PlayStation VR headset for the PS4. The game demonstrated a variety of gaming techniques, taking full advantage of the unique platform to showcase what could be achieved within this medium.

The entire gaming experience was specifically tailored for the DualShock 4 controller and VR headset, offering players an extraordinary viewpoint while they navigated a third-person platformer game. Unique interactions with the game’s surroundings were also possible, such as using headbutts to break through walls.

In contrast, the game titled Astro’s Playroom was specifically crafted to offer a more straightforward 3D platforming adventure, highlighting the diverse capabilities of the PlayStation 5. Each level in the game is themed around one of the PS5’s unique features, such as its advanced internal components. Surprisingly, despite functioning primarily as a tech demonstration, Astro’s Playroom received much appreciation for being an enjoyable and user-friendly platformer.

Lately, Team Asobi has seen remarkable success with their game, Astro’s Bot. This PS5-exclusive title was warmly embraced and, in fact, it topped as the highest-rated game on Metacritic in 2024. For a deeper dive into the game, be sure to read our review for further insights.
