As a lifelong PlayStation enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of gaming since the days of the original PlayStation, I wholeheartedly agree with this year’s Game of the Year selection – Astro Bot! In a sea of big-budget AAA titles and live-service games, it’s refreshing to see a game that focuses on pure fun, innovation, and nostalgia.
2024 stands out as one of the most unusual years within this console generation, with a distinct lack of original games from platform giants like PlayStation and Xbox. Meanwhile, Nintendo seems to be preparing for the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, leaving them in a relatively static state. This situation has led to an increase in remakes and remasters being released this year, as publishers work towards unveiling their larger projects in the future.
Despite a generally lackluster year for video games overall, there are numerous releases that have soared to unprecedented heights within the medium. This is particularly evident in the indie sector, where remarkable titles such as Balatro, Animal Well, and UFO 50 have emerged, captivating the attention of millions. In the AAA category, there has been no shortage of flagship games that have warranted the investment of players worldwide. However, one game has stood out among the rest in 2024, earning our most prestigious annual gaming award at ComicBook.
To that end, the winner of the 2024 ComicBook Golden Issue Award for Game of the Year is…
Astro Bot!
In 2024, Astro Bot stands out as undeniably offering the finest gaming experience. Despite not being the biggest game or boasting the most gripping narrative, its exceptional design elements such as responsive controls, vibrant stages, and groovy soundtrack make it an unparalleled joy to play. The game’s charm is so infectious that you’ll find yourself grinning from ear to ear throughout your entire playthrough. Astro Bot masterfully pays homage to gaming’s roots while infusing them with fresh innovations and enhancements exclusive to the PS5.
The experience that Astro Bot provides is only further enhanced by those who have been entrenched in the PlayStation ecosystem for decades. With hundreds of callbacks and Easter eggs to various PlayStation franchises and hardware that have come about since the 1990s, Astro Bot pays homage to what has come before while still charting a new path of its own. It’s a bit trite to say at this point, but Astro Bot really is a love letter to the 30-year history of the PlayStation brand.
When it comes to video game publishers constantly seeking their own version of the popular live-service game like Fortnite, Astro Bot stands out as proof that imaginative, age-appropriate games centered around exceptional gameplay can also thrive. Here’s hoping its widespread praise will inspire other gaming companies to remember the value of releasing smaller, high-quality games alongside those that generate substantial profits.
Congrats to PlayStation and developer Team Asobi for the win for Game of the Year!
