At a Tumultuous Time, Assassin’s Creed Shadows Is Doing the Business for Ubisoft

It’s common knowledge that Assassin’s Creed: Shadow has been enjoyed by 2 million players across all platforms and broke the series’ concurrent player record on Steam. Now, we have a bit more understanding about the game’s initial sales of Ubisoft’s feudal adventure when it was first released.

According to journalist Chris Dring, who possesses UK physical game sales data, the launch has comfortably surpassed all other boxed games this year in Britain, outperforming Monster Hunter Wilds with relative ease.

He further stated, “It outperformed Star Wars Outlaws by selling more boxed copies within a week than the latter did in three months. However, it still falls significantly short of 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

It’s important to note that since 2020, physical game sales have been on a downward trend, with this analysis not covering any digital sales. As a result, the current view we have only provides a limited perspective of the larger market scenario.

But the signs are certainly positive, which will be a relief for the embattled French firm.

Recently, Ubisoft has experienced some tough times following a series of commercial disappointments. There’s been talk that they might separate their most successful intellectual properties into a new company, potentially with financial backing from Tencent.

Additionally, it was rumored that Microsoft, along with others, had shown interest in acquiring the publisher, potentially aiming to absorb some of its top-tier brands.

Regardless of individual opinions about Ubisoft, it’s clear that the gaming industry would be poorer without it. Here’s to hoping that Assassin’s Creed: Shadow marks a turnaround for the company.
