Atomfall Allows Players to Kill All NPCs to Offer Players Ultimate Freedom – Lead Programmer

During the Future Games Show Spring Showcase, Atomfall‘s lead programmer Richard May discussed a unique aspect of the game: players can eliminate every NPC (Non-Player Character) without hindering their progress through the game’s story. According to GamesRadar, May referred to this as a challenging task during development.

According to May, we’ve managed to strike a nice equilibrium that grants you ample freedom while also offering an engaging narrative, and it is our hope that this will provide a unique feeling of liberty that people might not typically encounter, she explained.

In newer video games, the option to eliminate Non-Player Characters (NPCs) has become less common, with The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind being one of the last significant releases that offered this freedom. However, the game Atomfall presents a unique narrative structure, enabling players to kill NPCs without consequences.

May explained that we’re letting you make your own choices without dictating a specific path for you,” she said. “We provide some leads or possibilities for you to explore, but it’s entirely up to you who you encounter within the zone, who you befriend, and ultimately whom you decide to eliminate. You have the freedom to eliminate anyone in the zone if you so choose – I’m not suggesting you do, but the option is there.

The game titled “Atomfall” is steadily approaching its launch date on March 27th for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. From day one, it will also be accessible through Game Pass. In preparation for its release, the developer, Rebellion, has shared a video offering players helpful tips and strategies to navigate the game’s peculiar environment more easily.

The video provides guidance on interacting with different NPCs within the game, many of whom are associated with distinct factions and may have objectives that conflict with the player’s goals. Additionally, it offers strategies for handling confrontational situations, as these can be challenging due to limited ammunition. Players will need to carefully gather resources through scavenging and trading in order to accumulate a reserve.

As a gamer eagerly awaiting Atomfall’s release, I’ve been told by Art Director Ryan Greene that it’ll take approximately 25 hours for me to finish this post-apocalyptic adventure. He’s hinted that the game might draw comparisons with Fallout due to their shared setting. What sets Atomfall apart, though, is the freedom we gamers have to eliminate any Non-Player Character if we so choose. Can’t wait to dive in!

Greene stated, “You have the option to eliminate anyone or everyone, should you decide to do so.” He added, “This doesn’t pose an issue since there are various endings for the game. Some of these would be inaccessible if you were supposed to collaborate with certain characters, but rest assured, there are numerous other paths you can take to reach the end and secure a victory.
