Developer Atomfall‘s Revolution has disclosed that their upcoming survival game, titled “Atomfall,” will forgo the traditional quest system found in many open-world games. In an exclusive chat with Game Radar, art director Ryan Greene discussed what makes “Atomfall” unique compared to other titles with a similar theme, such as “Fallout.
As stated by Greene, the lack of a quest system in the game Atomfall is intentional as it aims to encourage exploration and investigations over following traditional quests. Instead, the game will offer several investigation paths for players to choose from at the start, allowing them to decide their own journey’s direction.
From the beginning, you’re free to choose your own path. Feel free to explore any lines of inquiry that interest you. However, since you’ll start with limited resources, some decisions might not yield favorable outcomes. This was stated by Greene.
Instead, he elaborates that the game, Atomfall, will share similarities with narratives akin to those in the classic TV series X-Files, rather than typical post-apocalyptic stories such as Fallout. This is due to the focus of the game on players unraveling the storyline within it.
Greene described it as “a detective game set in the Cold War era of the Lake District, reminiscent of ‘The X-Files.’ Although it has role-playing game (RPG) elements, it’s not strictly an RPG. Instead, think of it as a mix of investigation, survival, and occasionally confrontation – you’ll need to talk, research, and possibly defend yourself.
In Atomfall, I’m not just given a straightforward quest journal or objective markers to guide me. Instead, the game lets me explore various leads and unravel the intricate mysteries at my own pace. As I delve deeper into the game world, my investigations will ultimately reveal the cause of the catastrophe that sets the story in motion.
In this rephrased version, the game provides ample freedom for the player, which comes with an underlying feeling of unease or suspicion that the game aims to create. Players will confront numerous investigative hurdles, including deceptive clues and misleading written records, that could potentially lead them down a blind alley in their investigation. Despite this, the game’s design is such that players can still finish its story even if they interact aggressively with every Non-Player Character (NPC) they meet.
According to creative director Ben Fisher, it’s theoretically possible to progress through the game by eliminating every character, and somehow you’d still manage to gather enough clues to navigate your way through the storyline and comprehend its events.
In my opinion as a devoted gamer, I’d like to share some insights about an intriguing aspect of this game. At specific moments during gameplay, you have the power to take lives, which could ultimately lead to sealing one of the endings. However, it’s not set in stone. There are alternative paths where you can interact with certain characters, make thoughtful decisions, or even engage in trade for valuable information that allows you to rearrange these outcomes.
Last year, we got a glimpse of the game titled “Atomfall” through its trailer. This post-apocalyptic survival game is set in 1962, where the protagonist wakes up with no recollection of their own identity or location. The creators have mentioned that “Atomfall” draws inspiration from classic British science fiction stories such as “Doctor Who”, “The Prisoner”, and “Day of the Triffids”.
The game titled “Atomfall” is set to release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on March 27th. To learn more about this game, you can watch a trailer featuring its captivating setting, as well as information regarding the Deluxe Edition which offers early access to players.
