As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for anime adaptations, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation that borders on exhilaration upon hearing about the live-action Attack on Titan musical making its way to the Big Apple. Having grown up watching these productions in Japan, it’s always been a dream to witness such high-flying, heart-stopping action right here in the States.
For quite some time, egmr.ru has been sharing updates on Japanese stage plays based on live-action anime adaptations. Often, these shows don’t cross over from the Eastern hemisphere to the Western, but that’s changing as some major productions are now landing in North America. Next month, the musical adaptation of “Attack on Titan” is set to debut in New York City, and its cast members are eagerly preparing for their performances. In anticipation of the October shows, Kurumu Okamiya (who plays Eren Jaeger), Sara Takatsuki (Mikasa Ackerman), and Eito Konishi (Armin Arlert) have expressed their excitement about bringing this performance to the Big Apple.
For individuals unfamiliar with the “Attack on Titan” musical, it debuted in Japan in 2023, blending the thrilling, frequently violent narrative with melodious lyrics not found in the initial animated series. Interestingly, this is the first time that the Scout Regiment has been featured in a musical, but they’ve previously appeared on stage. Intriguingly, a previous performance encountered issues due to special effects malfunction. Creator Hajime Isayama had expressed concerns about this stage production given a past unfortunate incident, but believes that the team is vigilant and will take necessary precautions. Despite his initial apprehension, he expresses his excitement and anticipation for this musical adaptation.
The Live-Action Eren Soars
Kurumu Okamiya expressed eagerness to share intense performances and thrilling aerial action in the U.S., saying, “I haven’t performed in the States before, but I had the chance to visit New York in July and December of last year for the first time. I got to watch Some Like It Hot, and the audience was buzzing with enthusiasm. Experiencing the joy of foreign theater audiences was a novelty for me and really exhilarating. We aim to create an equally electrifying experience for our American audience.
Okamiya went on to say, “We aim to present Titans you’ve never encountered in real life, along with intense fight sequences that feel incredibly lifelike. We strive to depict emotions such as hatred, rage, sorrow, and pain authentically. Immerse yourself in the world of ATTACK on TITAN, and witness the magic of a 2D creation coming to life in 3D with characters that breathe and live. Observe how these characters summon every bit of their bravery to confront the danger.
Mikasa Is Ready For Live-Action War
Sara Takatsuki shared that she is excited for her debut in New York City, “For the first time, I’ll be performing in the city I admire, New York. This will mark a significant milestone for me, as it presents a fresh landscape for my art. The audience here may view our performance through unique lenses, which I find intriguing. I anticipate a mix of fans from the original work and new ones to be there. Although I face many challenges ahead, I’m ready to tackle them with enthusiasm and determination, ensuring an outstanding show.
Takatsuki further discussed the depth at which the actors immerse themselves in their roles, saying, “You can tell that other cast members are truly investing themselves in their characters. No matter which character you decide to follow, you’ll find the story captivating. As for us, the Training Corps, we’ve worked hard to make each scene feel as if it were happening live on stage. I hope you can sense our genuine struggle to become one with our characters.
Armin is Putting on His Thinking Cap
Finally, Eito Konishi, the live-action Armin, talked about the upcoming North American performances, “It’s my first time performing in the U.S. I never even dreamed that I’d get to perform in the States, so I’m extremely happy. I’m excited to see how theaters and audiences are different from Japan. I hope you pay attention to the various ways the Titans are expressed and materialized, fierce dance numbers, the Vertical Maneuvering Gears [also known as Omni-Directional Maneuvering or ODM gear] and the action scenes, as well as the strong bond between Eren, Mikasa, and Armin.”
To enjoy next month’s shows, you can find them at the New York City Center from October 11th to the 13th. I hope these performances encourage more anime stage plays to be brought over to the Western region.
