Brady Corbet took advantage of his time in the limelight to pay tribute to what the movie industry mourned so sadly after a recent tragic loss.
The 2025 Golden Globe Award winner for Best Director honored multiple individuals from his private life during the creation of his lengthy period drama, “The Brutalist”. At the end of his speech, he paid a touching tribute to Aubrey Plaza’s late spouse, filmmaker Jeff Baena, who tragically passed away on January 3rd. Officials have confirmed that his death was due to suicide.
His speech, which he carefully read from his mobile device so as not to omit any words, was touching even before he reached the heartbreaking conclusion.
Beyond expressing my heartfelt gratitude to the exquisite ensemble, particularly the outstanding talent, Adrien Brody who was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, I also extended my thanks to our exceptional producers. To the crew, a group of individuals whom I fervently hope will welcome me back someday, I offer my deepest appreciation. My friends, who have stood by us through trials and triumphs, deserve a special mention too. Lastly, I couldn’t forget to acknowledge my creative companion and source of inspiration, Mona Fastvold, and the incomparable woman who has been my rock, Mary Corbet.
And then things got really emotional.
Afterward, Corbet ensured everyone was focusing on his daughter, Ada, who looked absolutely captivating in her dress tonight, making him wonder if the mess we found ourselves in might just be worth it after all.
Switch to a shot featuring Ada seated at the family dining table, radiating joy with sparkling eyes, adorned in multiple layers of elegant, ballet-pink tulle that shimmers.
Corbet went on, expressing his deep affection for Ada James by saying, “I adore you to no end.” He also wanted to take a moment to honor three individuals who significantly impacted the creation of this film but are no longer with us: His grandfather, whom we knew as James, his uncle Jerry, and our cherished producer Kevin Turen. I feel their absence daily, and without their guidance, I wouldn’t be here today.
“And finally,” he concluded, “tonight my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family. Good night.”
A speech worthy of being recalled for various significant aspects. Plaza has appeared in several films produced posthumously by her husband, such as “Life After Beth” and “The Little Hours.” In May 2021, she publicly disclosed their marriage, which had taken place after a decade of companionship.
