Audra McDonald Responds to Patti LuPone’s Rift Claims

Audra McDonald was unaware of any beef with Patti LuPone. 

Following the disclosure by the star of Agatha All Along about her lingering issues with the actress from Annie, McDonald clarified the situation.

During an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings on May 29th, she stated that if there seems to be a divide between them, she is unaware of the cause. She suggested you would need to ask Patti about it as they haven’t met in approximately 11 years due to their busy lives.

McDonald repeated, “I don’t know what rift she’s talking about but you’d have to ask her.”

LuPone didn’t reveal the specific reasons behind her dispute with McDonald, but she did mention to The New Yorker that it was characteristic of McDonald to have backed an Instagram video posted by Hell’s Kitchen star Kecia Lewis in November 2024, where Lewis criticized LuPone for complaining about the noise from the Alicia Keys musical.

In Lewis’ video, she labeled LuPone’s complaints about noise as subtly discriminatory, suggesting that criticizing a predominantly Black Broadway show for being loud can inadvertently perpetuate damaging stereotypes. Furthermore, it can be perceived as disregarding the talent and expressions that are being highlighted on stage.

In a conversation with The New Yorker, LuPone expressed surprise upon seeing Lewis’ critical video. She mentioned that Broadway is often plagued by noise complaints, and while she dismissed Lewis’ comments as uninformed, she criticized McDonald for supporting such an opinion, stating that McDonald “should be aware of better.

As she reflected on the situation, LuPone emphasized of McDonald, “She’s not a friend.”

However, apart from what was already mentioned, LuPone didn’t provide any further details about why she dislikes McDonald. The former co-star in Gypsy—who is currently portraying Rose on Broadway—chose not to clarify the reason for their strained relationship.

When asked about McDonald’s representation of Rose, she responded by offering 15 silent moments to The New Yorker, followed by a comment, “How lovely the weather is today.
