Athletics: Women’s Marathon

Despite Eilish McColgan of Britain not participating in the marathon and instead joining Megan Keith in the 10,000m race, this year’s event is sure to be intriguing. The course is challenging, and Tigist Assefa, Ethiopia’s world record holder, isn’t thrilled about it. She believes her performance may not be up to par, yet she still holds a significant lead of approximately four minutes over the next competitor. This race, however, is known for its unpredictability, as an underdog could emerge and claim the gold medal. Contenders like Charlotte Purdue, Calli Hauger-Thackery, and Rose Harvey from Britain are considered long shots. – PAULA RADCLIFFE

Athletics: Men’s and Women’s 4x400m Relay Finals

1. The United States is considered the front-runner for the men’s race due to their impressive depth of talent. Quincy Wilson, a 16-year-old who qualified for the relay pool with three sub-45-second performances at trials, is definitely worth keeping an eye on. For the women, Jamaica and Ireland show promise, while the Netherlands are strong contenders in both categories. In relays, things can quickly go awry as there’s a lot of jostling after the second-leg runner breaks, potentially leaving you out of lane. The outcome is often unpredictable: during the 1996 event, a Jamaican athlete tripped on the third leg, managed to get up and win bronze. Modern Pentathlon: Men’s Final

It’s quite a challenge to refresh an unexpectedly outdated discipline like modern pentathlon. In fact, the proposed switch from horse jumping to an obstacle course after 2028 might lead many athletes, including GB’s current world and Olympic champion Joe Choong, to leave the sport – he’s even considering devoting himself fully to fencing instead. This could be one of the last opportunities to experience this quirky event in its classic form, as initially designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin for the modern Olympics. The five components are currently showjumping, fencing, swimming, and combined running and shooting. By Gabriel Tate

Football: Women’s Final

Though Team GB has already announced they won’t be participating in Paris, it doesn’t rule out Britain having participants. Former Chelsea manager Emma Hayes will take over the US women’s team at a significant event, and they are expected to compete strongly despite their poor showing at last year’s World Cup. The reigning champions Spain appear well-prepared to strengthen their grip on women’s football, while France’s les Bleus lack the stability to vie for a medal in their home Games. However, an intriguing group stage where only four of twelve teams are eliminated opens up the possibility for an unexpected standout team.
