Available now, this might be the darkest and most gorgeous metroidvania hitting Xbox and PC this year

With remarkable ambition, a fledgling independent game development team has managed to create their debut title, blending two highly popular genres – Metroidvania and Soulslike. What makes this feat even more intriguing is that they’ve accomplished it with the support of major industry players. This groundbreaking game, Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree, marks Primal Games’ first indie release through ID@Xbox.

As a fan, I’m immersing myself in Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree, a captivating tale woven by Brian Mitsoda (Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodlines veteran) and brought to life by Primal Games with Knights Peak Interactive. In this game, I step into my own created character’s shoes, embarking on a journey through the fantastical kingdom of Faelduum where I must prepare myself for battle against progressively fierce creatures.

In a statement given to Xbox Wire, Mitsoda expresses that one reason he became involved with the project was due to its clear resemblance to Castlevania, a game series he’s always loved. He adds that the game’s dark fantasy elements were reminiscent of Berserk, and there were hints of traditional folklore and fairy tales as well.

Mitsoda’s intricate storyline is framed by evocative, haunting artwork done by hand and an original soundtrack created by Christos Antoniou (of Septicflesh) and performed by the Filmharmonic Orchestra of Prague. The voice cast for Mandragora includes Aysha Selim, known for her roles in Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft.

In his comment from the Mandragora Kickstarter campaign, Antoniou expressed that the game’s grand, ominous fantasy style resonated deeply with him. When the team offered him the chance to compose music for the game, he was thrilled by the prospect of contributing to a video game’s soundtrack and helping breathe life into this captivating, immersive world.

Mandragora: The remarkable lineup of the Witch Tree is merely the beginning of its allure.

Characters take on the role of an Inquisitor, a powerful enforcer tasked with upholding the King Priest’s rule by hunting down dissidents. But as events unfold, the Inquisitor may begin to question their loyalty and disobey commands once – triggering a complex narrative path filled with opportunities for multiple outcomes. The choices you make in this game can have significant repercussions. Over 40 hours of immersive gameplay are offered across 75 distinct locations, each brimming with hidden mysteries, buried treasures, and memorable characters.

Instead of simply interacting with characters and navigating through the journey to Entropy, players have the opportunity to recruit these characters for their caravan, who will aid them throughout their trip. Among these helpful individuals are a skilled blacksmith, a tailor who produces essential bandages and armor kits, and an enigmatic alchemist. By meeting talented craftsmen and creating items, players can determine whether the Inquisitor will thrive or perish in the midst of battle against a corrupted monster.

Mandragora presents six distinct character roles for players to select: Vanguard, Pyromancer, Sorcerer, Shadowcrafter, Woodsman, or Avenger. Each role includes a rich array of abilities and weapons, which are structured within an engaging Talent Tree system boasting over 200 active and passive skill upgrades.

In the world of Faelduum, those skills will prove indispensable, as players engage with 19 mini-bosses and 15 formidable main bosses in intense battles. They can opt for raw power using medieval weapons or harness magic through spell casting, all within a dynamic 2.5D side-scrolling environment.

Primal Games doesn’t merely blend 2.5D side-scrolling, metroidvania, and soulslike genres; they’ve added a generous helping of action RPG elements to give it an unique taste. This includes crafting options with more than 350 items, 110 consumables, and enchantments for players to uncover. A single playthrough might not be enough to explore all that Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree has in store. Fortunately, players can revisit Faelduum in New Game Plus, retaining the advancements their Inquisitor made in the previous gameplay session.

As a fervent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the long-awaited game “Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree” was initially slated for a 2023 release, but due to some shifts in partnerships between the Hungarian studio and publishers, it found a suitable home with Knights Peak. At last, we’ll be able to create our Inquisitor, delve into the enchanting Kingdom of Faelduum, and immerse ourselves in this intricate narrative and expansive action RPG on April 17, when Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree graces both Xbox and PC platforms.
