WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Hacks season 4, episode 6.
In the sixth episode of “Hacks” season 4 titled “Mrs. Table,” Hannah Einbinder’s character Ava Daniels undergoes a significant transformation, hitting a personal and professional tipping point. The conflict with her comic mentor and boss, Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart), which started in the first two episodes of season 4, has led Ava to assert her authority as the head writer for Deborah’s new late-night show. However, despite being worthy of this position, episode 6 begins to expose the cracks in Ava’s inexperienced facade that fuel an explosive workplace crisis.
In the 6th episode of Hacks season 4, there are still many amusing and insightful scenes for Deborah, such as a shocking visit from Rosie O’Donnell. However, the focus shifts more towards Ava as she slips back into a dangerous pattern that was once familiar to her. As Kiki warned Ava in Hacks season 4, episode 3, attempting to outmaneuver the seasoned diva might not end well, and this prediction begins to materialize in “Mrs. Table.” In fact, Ava considers leaving the show altogether, which could imply that Deborah was correct when she retracted her original head writer offer.
Hacks Season 4, Episode 6 Smartly Brings Ava To A Personal & Professional Breaking Point
Hannah Einbinder Gives An Exceptional & Layered Performance As The Spiraling Ava
Deborah exploits Ava’s weakness by getting her former partner, Ruby Rojas – who currently stars in DC’s fictional movie “Wolf Girl” and appears on Deborah’s late-night show – to share an embarrassing tale about Ava during a live broadcast. Ruby doesn’t directly mention Ava, but apologizes later, leading Ava to the brink of insanity. In the aftermath, she becomes enraged at her writing team for ordering expensive meals on the company’s account under the alias “Mrs. Table,” followed by a tantrum and driving recklessly through the studio lot parking gate.
Beyond these events, Ava undergoes an embarrassingly complicated split with the polyamorous duo she encountered earlier in the season. They think that Ava is only interested in them for physical intimacy, a claim she doesn’t deny, and they were seeking a deeper emotional three-way bond. This incident highlights yet another instance where Ava finds herself ill-equipped for some of the complex scenarios she has chosen to engage in. It’s no surprise that Ava would lose her fresh drive in an instant, a setback that will ultimately prove beneficial as she has been overreaching herself.
In Hacks season 4, episode 6, Ava’s predicament, though tough and amusing to observe, cleverly sets the stage for a genuine healing journey for both Ava and Deborah. After a season of withholding feelings from each other, they are forced to put their egos aside, especially when one of Deborah’s dogs is attacked by a coyote – reminiscent of an earlier coyote scene in Hacks season 4 episode 2. This unfortunate event allows the two former adversaries to share a laugh once more.
Hacks Season 4 Continues Its Great Trend Of Exciting & Relevant Guest Stars
Rosie O’Donnell Shares Some Powerful Hollywood Advice With Deborah
This season of “Hacks” has been particularly star-studded, with a notable appearance by Rosie O’Donnell in episode 6, adding to the impressive roster of guest stars such as Kristen Bell, Jimmy Kimmel, and Julianne Nicholson in episode 5. Just like Carol Burnett and Merrill Markoe in episode 4, O’Donnell has made a significant mark on television’s history, being one of the pioneering women in an industry traditionally dominated by men. In essence, these women – O’Donnell, Burnett, and Markoe – are true trailblazers in the world of television, and their support for Deborah in “Hacks” serves as a tribute to their remarkable accomplishments.
Apart from O’Donnell, I, too, rejoin the cast as DJ Vance – Deborah’s daughter – in the hit series “Hacks.” Known for my comic timing, I bring laughter to the show once again, portraying a pregnant DJ who’s juggling a workout while trying to reach Deborah. The scene ends with an amusing twist as I, in character, accidentally wet myself during our call.
In the upcoming episodes of season 4, character Ruby (portrayed by Lorenza Izzo) reappears for the first time since season 3, episode 4, and social media sensation Jake Shane takes on a larger role as Deborah’s “social media sidekick,” following his introduction in season 4, episode 4. With only four episodes remaining in Hacks season 4, it seems that Ava and Deborah are making progress towards achieving success with their show and rekindling their friendship.
