Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars Filming Updates Reveal Potential Start Date, Location

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I must admit that Saturday night’s Comic-Con announcement left me absolutely thrilled! The return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and the Russos at the helm for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars is a dream come true for many of us in the MCU community.

Marvel Studios is bringing back key elements of the Avengers team for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” but this time around, there will be adjustments to their typical production process. If you missed the buzz last Saturday at Comic-Con, here’s a quick update: Robert Downey Jr. is set to reprise his role as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, Joe and Anthony Russo have been confirmed to direct the upcoming Avengers films. These announcements are undoubtedly significant, but new information has emerged regarding Downey and the Russos’ compensation and when production on the new Avengers movies will start.

As reported by Variety, Marvel Studios has decided to film Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in London instead of Atlanta, where they typically produce their films. This shift is expected to start in the second quarter of 2025. Notably, most Marvel productions have been based in Atlanta, so this change represents a deviation from the usual pattern.

Robert Downey’s one condition to return to Marvel revealed

According to a source, Robert Downey Jr. agreed to reprise his role if and only if directors Joe and Anthony Russo helmed both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The insider added that he would work with no one else but them.

Downey Jr.’s upcoming MCU return is expected to bring him the largest paycheck of his career, with reports suggesting he’ll earn over $80 million. Moreover, the Iron Man actor has asked for travel on a private jet, personal security, and an entire camp setup on set for the next two Avengers movies.

Recently, Downey, who had taken a break from Marvel for several years, showed signs of considering coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as early as June.

As a gamer, let me tell you, this role feels like it was tailor-made for me. It’s almost as if they read my mind and crafted the character to mirror my personality, even though he’s cooler than I could ever dream of being. Last month, in an interview with Variety, I admitted that I’ve become surprisingly open to the idea. It’s insane, really! When I see the photos we’re taking, I can’t help but wonder if we still look decent: “Are we still alright?” And you know what? We actually do look good!

In an individual conversation, Downey shared that he had never wagered against Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and his commitment to the Marvel franchise he manages. “I often remark: Never underestimate Kevin Feige. It’s a losing proposition. He holds all the cards. He’ll emerge victorious every time.”
