As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has followed the development of the MCU closely over the years, I’m beyond excited about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars movies. The casting choices for the Fantastic Four alone have me buzzing with anticipation!
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve experienced some ups and downs with Marvel Studios over the past few years. But at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, they unveiled their grandest weapon yet – none other than Robert Downey Jr. himself!
The actor who helped kickstart the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008 announced his return to the series, though he won’t reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man.
I’ve been excited about my role in the upcoming movies, but instead of that, I will now bring the iconic villain Doctor Doom to life on the big screen in two forthcoming Avengers films. These movies are being directed by the brilliant Russo brothers, who gave us Infinity War and Endgame.
The news elicited various reactions among fans, leaving some surprised, split, and perplexed. Some expressed concern that Doom’s unique identity might be jeopardized by a close connection with Tony Stark. Others, however, have put their trust in Downey Jr based on his recent Oscar victory for “Oppenheimer.”
As a long-time fan of Marvel Comics and their cinematic universe, I’m always on the lookout for the latest news about upcoming blockbusters. So, when can we eagerly anticipate the next Marvel extravaganza? Let me fill you in on what we know so far about Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Doomsday release date speculation
The anticipated release of Avengers: Doomsday is currently planned for May 2026. Although a definite date hasn’t been set yet, Marvel is most likely aiming for the initial weekend of that month to initiate the summer blockbuster season.
During the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s peak period, this was an ideal location for the production company. However, unfortunate Hollywood strikes in 2023 prevented them from meeting this year’s schedule.
Who will star in Avengers: Doomsday? Rumoured and confirmed members
Title for Avengers: Doomsday and its follow-up Secret Wars: In these movies, Marvel’s renowned actor Robert Downey Jr takes on the malevolent role of Doctor Doom, notoriously known as a formidable foe to the Fantastic Four.
It’s still undecided if this character will have no connection to Downey Jr.’s previous roles in the franchise or if Doom will be portrayed as a version of Tony Stark in the upcoming project. Such a change could potentially upset some comics enthusiasts.
At San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that Downey Jr. had been chosen for the eagerly anticipated part. Joe Russo, one of the Doomsday directors, excitedly told the Hall H crowd, “Get ready for the finest actor the world has to offer!”
Check out the electric moment of the reveal in the video below.

As a dedicated Marvel movies fan, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news. He shared with Entertainment Weekly that the team is busy “whipping up something extraordinary.”

What is Avengers: Doomsday about?
The upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday” doesn’t have a confirmed storyline as of now. However, it’s anticipated that Victor von Doom will emerge as a significant menace to the Marvel universe.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m excited to share that the upcoming films “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” are going to be part of an intriguing saga. Similar to how “Infinity War” and its sequel “Endgame” captivated audiences with their interconnected stories, these two movies will build upon each other in a seamless narrative flow. One film will naturally lead into the next, keeping us on the edge of our seats as we unravel the mysteries unfolding on the big screen.
In the 2016 “Secret Wars” comic book series, Doctor Doom collects remnants of a destroyed multiverse and rebuilds them into Battleworld, a realm where he holds complete control as its undisputed king.
Before this plot, Marvel comic books had explored the idea of collisions between different realities. In these encounters, two worlds would clash, leading to the destruction of both or compelling one side to defend itself.
In Avengers: Doomsday, it’s possible that the frightening incidents start unfolding, causing the villainous character to establish his bizarre new world much like in the original story.
Why was Avengers: The Kang Dynasty cancelled?
Beforehand, the fifth Avengers film was planned to be titled “The Kang Dynasty” and carry on storylines initiated in Disney Plus show “Loki” and the Marvel film “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”.
In two different Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions, Jonathan Majors portrayed versions of Kang the Conqueror – an formidable adversary with time-traveling abilities and an initial plan to become the MCU’s new major antagonist, comparable to Thanos.
As a film enthusiast, I was looking forward to seeing Majors in upcoming Marvel projects. Sadly, things took an unexpected turn when he faced allegations of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend. A jury in New York found him guilty on two counts, but thankfully, he was acquitted of one assault charge and aggravated harassment. Nonetheless, these events have left me feeling disappointed and uncertain about his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Instead of choosing a new actor for Kang as some anticipated, Marvel Studios opted for a completely fresh approach in their storyline development.
