As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’m thrilled to share that the release date for “Avengers: Secret Wars” has been announced, even before the cameras start rolling on “Avengers: Doomsday.” In an exclusive chat with Deadline to hype this month’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” our beloved Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Captain America, revealed some exciting insights about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His character is poised to play a pivotal role moving forward, ensuring that he’ll be a busy bee for the next couple of years. It comes as no surprise that the production of these two colossal blockbusters will be an epic endeavor, given that directors Joe and Anthony Russo have devised a schedule that stretches over two years.
During both summers, we’ll film ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ followed by its sequel,” Mackie explained. “There will be plenty more coming up for us.
The double blow of movies titled “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” will mark the conclusion of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Storyline, with the franchise’s diverse superheroes facing off against Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom. Scheduled for release in May 2026, “Doomsday” follows closely by “Secret Wars” in May 2027. In a statement made late last January, Anthony Mackie confirmed his return as Captain America in both films, aiming to continue playing the role for the next decade.
Apart from Mackie, Benedict Cumberbatch is set to feature in both “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” reprising his character as Doctor Strange. Marvel has also verified that Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will make appearances in the upcoming Avengers films following their MCU debut this summer in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” There are rumors circulating about the involvement of Marvel veterans like Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell, but nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet.
It appears Marvel is planning a different strategy for “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”, compared to how they produced “Infinity War” and “Endgame”. Instead of shooting both films back-to-back with minimal breaks, they intend to space out the productions by a year. While “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” will still share a continuous narrative, this approach is expected to be advantageous.
Firstly, it gives the Russo Brothers the opportunity to focus on one film at a time. They can pour all their energy and dedication into “Doomsday” this year, followed by “Secret Wars” next year. Given that “Doomsday” is less than a year from release, this seems like a wise decision.
Additionally, the gap between productions will provide them with time to refine the “Secret Wars” script. Any potential issues or kinks can be ironed out during this period, ensuring the final product for the Multiverse Saga is as perfect as possible.
As a film critic, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming releases from Marvel, particularly “Captain America: Brave New World,” which seems to be generating a mix of reactions following early reviews. The return of the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr., key players in the Infinity Saga, suggests that Marvel is aiming to rekindle the magic of those epic films. With so many threads from the Multiverse Saga to navigate, it will be fascinating to witness how this tale unfolds with the Russos at the helm, hoping they’ve devised a compelling and cohesive narrative for us fans to enjoy.
