Avengers: Secret Wars – release date, cast speculation and plot theories

As a long-time comic book fan and someone who grew up reading the Avengers and Marvel Universe stories, I’m beyond excited for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie. The prospect of seeing my favorite superheroes and villains from different realities collide on the big screen is an absolute dream come true.

After an exciting Comic-Con panel in San Diego, Avengers: Secret Wars is now generating significant buzz in the Hollywood community.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be taking on the role of the iconic antagonist, Victor Von Doom, in the upcoming epic crossover film and its predecessor, Avengers: Doomsday. With an Academy Award under my belt, it’s an honor to bring this legendary villain to life for fans.

The announcement sparked diverse reactions, blending enthusiasm and perplexity among fans, who straightaway started guessing if the Fantastic Four’s main adversary would be modeled after Tony Stark or remain an independent character.

Regardless of the situation, Marvel Studios’ Secret Wars project is shaping up to be an incredibly ambitious undertaking. One source even suggests that over 60 well-known Marvel characters might make an appearance in this film.

If you’re just as enthusiastic as us, keep reading for a summary of what’s been announced and speculated about Avengers: Secret Wars, including the estimated release date and both verified and unconfirmed acting talents involved.

Avengers: Secret Wars release date

The film “Avengers: Secret Wars” is set to hit theaters on Friday, May 7, 2027. This marks the beginning of the summer movie season for that year, much like how “Infinity War” and “Endgame” kicked things off previously.

The journey to the next Marvel collaboration on screen has encountered bumps, with setbacks including Hollywood labor disputes and a reevaluation at Marvel Studios following some major letdowns.

As a movie critic, I have to admit that the excitement surrounding Robert Downey Jr’s comeback to this film has definitely piqued my curiosity. Some fans might be hesitant about his role, but the buzz around his return is undeniable.

Avengers: Secret Wars cast: confirmed and rumoured names

At this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr will take on the role of the notorious antagonist, Doctor Doom, in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars (as well as its prequel, Doomsday).

Fans are eagerly waiting to understand the connection, if any, between this new role and Tony Stark’s (Iron Man) previous work. Some hope for a clear distinction between the two characters.

As a longtime fan of the Marvel universe, I can hardly contain my excitement over the latest news about the upcoming Doom films. It’s not every day that we get to see our favorite comic book characters come to life on the big screen, and the fact that Doom’s most iconic adversaries, the Fantastic Four, will be joining him in these crossover flicks is just icing on the cake.

Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed that he will be part of the upcoming Avengers films, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. This announcement comes on the heels of the impressive box office performances of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

As a longtime fan of Marvel Comics and the Avengers in particular, I’m thrilled to share my perspective on the current cast of characters set to appear in the upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars” series. So far, we have an intriguing lineup that’s sure to please both new and veteran fans alike. But let me tell you, this is just the tip of the iceberg!

Confirmed cast

  • Robert Downey Jr as Victor von Doom aka Doctor Doom
  • Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange aka Doctor Strange
  • Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards aka Mr Fantastic
  • Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm aka Invisible Woman
  • Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm aka Human Torch
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm aka The Thing

In June 2024, according to a report from Deadline, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars could feature over 60 previously introduced MCU characters rejoining the action. Among these two films, Secret Wars may have the most guest appearances based on the original material.

In the “Secret Wars” comic series, the familiar universe is annihilated and replaced by an extraordinary new realm called Battleworld. Essentially, this alternate reality is a bizarre amalgamation of various Marvel universes merged into one perilous planet.

As a longtime fan of Marvel movies, I’m thrilled to share my perspective on this exciting possibility. Based on my extensive knowledge and appreciation for the franchise, I believe that allowing numerous Marvel stars from past and present to return would significantly enhance the viewing experience.

Rumoured/likely cast

  • Chris Hemsworth as Thor
  • Simu Liu as Shang-Chi
  • Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Captain America
  • Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier
  • Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man

  • Benedict Wong as Wong
  • Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner aka Hulk
  • Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk
  • Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil

As a die-hard movie fan of Marvel’s multiverse adventures, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as Secret Wars approaches. This epic conclusion could potentially mark the end of the road for some talented actors who graced our screens during the pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe era. Hopefully, we get to savor their performances one last time before they bid farewell to the Marvel cinematic landscape.

A few actors greatly desired by fans are Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who recently appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, along with Hugh Jackman and other X-Men cast members from Fox’s X-Men series. (Note: These actors were conspicuously missing from Deadpool and Wolverine.)

Currently, we can only hope and guess which of our preferred options might be included. Please check back for updates as soon as any formal announcements are released.

What could happen in Avengers: Secret Wars?

Two distinct Secret Wars storylines with the same name have emerged in comic book history, each boasting unique styles and significant differences in content.

From 1984 onwards, a cosmic being named the Beyonder brought the renowned superheroes and villains of the Marvel Universe to Battleworld against their will, compelling them to fight each other for amusement.

Despite earning significant sales, this comic book event drew harsh criticism from critics due to its thin plotline perceived as being primarily geared towards marketing merchandise. However, it continues to hold a sentimental value for fans who were kids during its release.

In 2015, the Secret Wars storyline was reimagined with a contemporary twist and received more positive reviews from critics. During this event, the Marvel Universes of Earth-616 (home to the traditional Marvel heroes) and the Ultimate Marvel Universe (where Miles Morales originated) clashed in a massive collision known as an incursion.

To avoid total destruction, Doctor Doom utilizes the might of the Beyonders and merges all the various realities from the Marvel Universe into one single realm, which he names Battleworld. As a natural consequence, he assumes the throne as its emperor.

In the Marvel Universe, both the heroes and the villains can’t recall their past lives before Doom established his new rule. Consequently, many of them accept the unusual world they now inhabit without raising questions.

Based on Doom’s important part in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars (expected in 2027), it’s reasonable to assume that this storyline will serve as the initial blueprint. However, keep in mind that film adaptations often make adjustments (as seen in Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War).
