Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Marvel’s Thunderbolts*
Eight years following Tony Stark’s sale of Avengers Tower in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, we’ve now learned who purchased this famous MCU building and its destiny, thanks to Marvel’s new team called the Thunderbolts*. In the latest ensemble film, several well-known characters (along with a few new recruits) unite to create this fresh team. Yet, throughout their journey, secrets about the previous Avengers Tower are also unveiled, finally answering a longstanding mystery that fans have been curious about for nearly a decade.
In the comic series Thunderbolts, characters such as Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, Ghost, and John Walker unintentionally cross paths due to the manipulations of CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who is also the leader of the secretive O.X.E Group. Over many years, Val and OXE have been attempting to develop their own superhuman, eventually achieving an unexpected success in the form of Bob, aka Sentry. As the group transitions into a fresh chapter within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the iconic Avengers Tower plays a crucial role, even though it has been renamed and renovated. Here’s a breakdown of who now owns the Avengers Tower, its new title, and its purpose as we move into Phase 6 of the MCU.
Avengers Tower New Owner And Name Explained
Valentina and The Watchtower
It is verified that Valentina and O.X.E. Group were the ones who bought Avengers Tower from Tony Stark after the establishment of the Avengers Compound in upstate New York. Originally, they intended to rename the famous MCU building as The Watchtower, with the plan being for it to serve as a new base for their custom-made superhero, Sentry, who would take orders directly from Valentina. As renovations were underway to give the building a modern, all-black look, the Sentry Project was terminated due to numerous setbacks and the potential impeachment of Valentina…but then came Bob.
Among Project Sentry’s final test subjects, it was found that the experiment successfully enhanced Bob Reynolds with remarkable abilities and spurred Val to relocate O.X.E. Group’s base back to the Watchtower. In the original comics, Sentry possessed a Watchtower, which stood prominently above Stark Tower. Although this structure was rarely depicted for years, it was eventually brought back into focus when Bob used his powers to make people forget about him as a means of containing The Void. Given these circumstances, it’s not surprising that Avengers Tower now serves as The Watchtower in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Watchtower Is Now The Base For The New Avengers
Confirmed In Thunderbolts* Post-Credits Scene
To add to that, the post-credits scene in Thunderbolts implies that the Watchtower will serve as the main operating base for “The New Avengers,” which was nicknamed the Thunderbolts by Val at the end of the movie (the asterisk in the title is a nod to this). It appears from the post-credits that Val and O.X.E. have completed the renovations on the Watchtower and are now supporting this new team. The updated “A” logo, advanced technology and AI resembling JARVIS or FRIDAY, and even a few jets suggest that a new chapter has begun for the old Avengers Tower.
It’s quite exciting to note that Sentry and Watchtower, characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), are making their entrance alongside the New Avengers. This is similar to how they were reintroduced with the debut of the comics’ New Avengers in 2005. Interestingly, the Avengers Tower, also known as Watchtower, has been transformed into a fully operational superhero headquarters again, particularly with the approach of MCU’s Phase 6 and films like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. It’s plausible that we might see this new base for the New Avengers again, and it could potentially serve as a significant gathering point for all teams scheduled to appear in the 2026 film, Doomsday.
The Significance Of The New Avengers Being In Avengers Tower
The New Avengers Are Already Clashing With Captain America
From the grand unveiling of the New Avengers to the media alongside Thunderbolts’ finale, the widespread magazine covers during credits, and even their appearance on Wheaties boxes, it’s clear they aim for a high-profile presence. Given their early confrontations with Sam Wilson’s Captain America and his team (who comically have copyrighted the “Avengers” name), having Avengers Tower as their base works in the New Avengers’ favor, regardless of whether the Watchtower moniker prevails or not. The return of this iconic building to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a near-decade long enigma is certainly enticing for the MCU’s future.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is now playing in theaters from Marvel Studios.
