Avowed Confirmed to Run at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X: Exciting New Details Revealed!

In a lightning-fast Q&A session with MinnMax’s Ben Hanson, Carrie Patel, the director of Avowed (an upcoming RPG by Obsidian Entertainment), answered a staggering 175 questions. With the game set to release on Xbox Game Pass on February 18, 2025, this interview offered valuable insights into various aspects of the game, such as gameplay mechanics, frame rates, and even some surprise appearances. Here’s a quick summary of the most intriguing tidbits revealed in the interview.

Avowed is not fully open-world

When questioned about common misunderstandings regarding the game, Patel made it clear that Avowed isn’t a traditional open-world RPG; instead, it offers an “open-zone” experience. This means that while players can explore freely within certain areas, they must progress through these zones sequentially rather than roaming the entire map as in open-world games. For instance, traveling from Dawnshore to Emerald Stair may lead to tougher combat encounters, necessitating upgrades to your armor and weapons before moving forward. Patel likened the game’s size to The Outer Worlds, with its largest town housing around 100 NPCs for interaction. Followers of Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity series can anticipate appearances by familiar characters since both games share the same universe.

Frame rates and performance on Xbox

Perhaps the most exciting confirmation was that Avowed will run at up to 60 FPS on Xbox Series X.

During this particular interview, we learned more about the Series X’s performance. However, rumors from Insider Gaming hint at additional features for Xbox Series S users. It seems that these players might be able to switch between 30 and 40 FPS modes, offering a degree of customization for those using the compact console.

New game plus and what to expect for the future

The game, confirmed, offers a New Game Plus option, enabling players to retain their achievements for future play sessions. Moreover, it comes with a distinct “caution point” that signals when the main storyline becomes irreversible, preventing players from missing out on side missions or further exploration.

When asked if there might be a sequel to Avowed, Patel suggested that certain decisions made in the game could have lasting effects by replying, “In theory, yes.” Although there hasn’t been an official DLC announcement yet, she subtly hinted at the possibility with a playful “Perhaps.

Companions and build freedom

Players have the freedom to decide how their companions should attack, which abilities to enhance, and even modify their appearance using skins from the Premium Edition. The Premium Edition, available for $24.99 for those upgrading through Game Pass, offers an early access period of five days beginning February 13th.

Another exciting feature is the versatility in weapon choice, such as wielding both a wand and pistol at once. For players seeking a chaotic yet enjoyable experience, Patel hinted that dual-wielding maces would provide an entertaining twist.

Dialogue options will be fun and don’t be afraid to be evil

In Avowed, dialogue choices offer a lively mix of characters, as Patel playfully remarks, “You have quite a knack for being cheeky and mischievous – it’s amusing.” The game also provides an opportunity for players to align with the main villain, hinting at the possibility of a completely malevolent role-play experience.

Delaying the game means more polish

The postponement of the game’s release from 2024 to 2025 provided Obsidian with an extended period for refining the game. Patel pointed out that adjustments to challenge levels and upgrades costs were among the advantages gained from this additional development period.
