Avowed Dominates Steam Sales: Is This the RPG of the Year?

Even though it’s only just been released, Avowed from Xbox Game Studios and Obsidian Entertainment is doing exceptionally well in sales. As I write this, it’s currently the top-selling game on Steam in the U.S, and it ranks within the top five globally. However, it’s important to note that these figures don’t account for players accessing Avowed through Blizzard’s Battle.net service or the Xbox app on PC, nor does it include those playing on Xbox Series X|S consoles.

At present, Avowed can be accessed exclusively by those who purchase the Premium Edition on Steam. However, users subscribed to Xbox Game Pass can acquire the Premium Upgrade separately, enabling them to play earlier. This practice has been prevalent with many first-party Xbox games in recent years and is expected to carry on in 2025, featuring Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight and id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages.

Avowed is a strong return to the world of Eora

It’s clear that the information we have now about the game is preliminary, so we’ll require additional data from companies such as Circana to gain a clearer perspective on its performance. Nonetheless, it’s exciting to observe Avowed launching successfully. Obsidian Entertainment has a rich history of creating outstanding role-playing games, and I hope they continue to thrive in the future.

At the moment, I’m thoroughly enjoying my time with Avowed, and the combat feels harmonious when you combine spells with various weapons. Once I finish the game, I plan to start a fresh character so I can explore different choices and experiment with new weapons – something that I rarely do following RPG games.

If you’re hesitant about giving it a go, I strongly recommend checking out our review by my colleague Zachary Boddy. He expresses that diving back into the realm of Eora from a fresh viewpoint has offered him countless hours of pleasure, filled with endless exploration, vibrant battles, engaging dialogues, and intriguing narratives. In his opinion, Avowed is simply enjoyable, making it one of the standout first-party Xbox games he’s played in the last year, alongside Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

On February 18, 2025, Avowed is set to debut simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via Steam, the Xbox App, and Battle.net. Given that it’s an Xbox first-party game, the standard edition will be accessible from day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Those who preorder the Premium Edition of the game can begin playing four days earlier, starting on February 13. For comprehensive information, refer to our Avowed preorder guide.
