Summary
- Avowed currently has no means of changing your character’s appearance once you exit the character creator.
- A cursory glance on forums related to Avowed shows this as one of the most requested features.
- It’s likely something Obsidian will add in the future.
Unlike many contemporary triple-A role-playing games where customized characters cannot be altered post-character creation, Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed breaks this pattern. However, it is important to note that before leaving the character creator, the game does clearly state that there are no alterations allowed for your character. So, if you decide to proceed with character creation, you have been duly informed of this limitation.
At times, your preferences might shift or you could find yourself dissatisfied with how your character appears in different lighting conditions. This issue was brought up by Reddit user ArtificialInelegance, who shared that they got so focused on their character’s appearance that they decided to restart Avowed after 25 hours, instead of continuing with a character they weren’t content with.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…
Although it’s quite drastic to feel let down because your custom character isn’t living up to the “godlike” expectation, I can understand why you might be disappointed with your character’s appearance. Just like me back in 2013 when I started playing Grand Theft Auto Online, I created a decent-looking character in the dimly lit character creator, but once I stepped out onto the bright streets of Los Santos, his unattractive features became apparent. It seems this issue is also present in Avowed, where the lighting within the character creator might not accurately represent all the lighting situations your character will encounter throughout the game.
In the discussion thread, it’s been noted by frequent contributor Felix_Likes_Tofu that the character customization in Avowed is an integral part of the gameplay experience. Their comment reads, “As I play games like these, I prefer my character’s look to evolve with my progress. Upon entering the main city, a haircut feels appropriate. After mastering some magic, growing a moustache seems fitting. Spending extended periods in the forest leads me to grow longer hair and a more substantial beard. Delving deep into a spider lair? I think it’s time for a clean shave again.
At the moment, there is no method available in the game for altering your character’s physical features beyond clothing choices. Even story-compatible options for cosmetic changes like hairstyles or makeup are absent.
Fortunately, Obsidian is still updating Avowed. It’s plausible that they may include a feature during gameplay for customizing your character’s appearance in the future. This might not have been high on their priority list before release, but it could be incorporated into the game with upcoming updates. As I’ve already disguised my entire face with tree bark, this isn’t an issue that has affected me directly.
