Avowed game director leaves Obsidian Entertainment for Netflix’s Night School Studio

As a researcher reporting on the latest developments in the gaming industry, I am sharing an update about Obsidian Entertainment: the game director of their upcoming project, Avowed, Carrie Patel, announced her departure from the studio on LinkedIn yesterday (thanks to Insider Gaming for the heads-up). Now, she is taking on a new role as a game director at Night School Studio, which is owned by Netflix.

For twelve years, Patel was employed at Obsidian Entertainment, where they played significant roles in creating games such as Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds, serving as a narrative designer. Additionally, Patel wrote for Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire and led the narrative design team on the DLC for The Outer World’s Peril on Gorgon expansion.

Events culminated in Patel assuming the role of game director for Avowed, and the game was released back in February of this year.

In 2021, Netflix made a move into the gaming industry by purchasing Night School Studio, a company recognized for creating storyline-centric games like Oxenfree, Afterparty, and the upcoming sequel, Oxenfree 2.

Netflix additionally established a studio primarily focusing on AAA-level productions, bringing on board developers who previously worked on popular franchises such as Halo and God of War. However, last year, the AAA studio founded by Netflix closed down without any projects from the team being officially announced.

2025 saw further reductions in Netflix’s gaming sector, resulting in layoffs among employees at Night School Studio.

For Obsidian Entertainment’s future plans, they are expected to release The Outer Worlds 2 sometime in 2025. Meanwhile, the team working on Avowed is still actively sharing updates, including the addition of requested features such as a photo mode and more enhancements.
