Avowed Has Serious Dark Messiah of Might & Magic Energy

The game “Avowed” didn’t turn out as I anticipated. I’ve been keeping tabs on it since its initial unveiling several years ago. People have often described it as a rival to games like Skyrim and Baldur’s Gate 3, with its expansive open world and intricate RPG mechanics. However, after just getting past the opening, it seems less like that and more focused, detailed, and deliberate in its gameplay so far.

The new game seems like a mix of The Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity, focusing on immersive exploration and lovable characters rather than filling it up with unnecessary content. So far, I’m intrigued and eager to discover more, but what really stands out for me is its hilarious combat style.

Killing Enemies In Avowed Is So Much Fun

In no time at all, it’s evident that Avowed offers a wide array of combat choices. You could opt for the precision of a ranger who masterfully handles a sword and shield, the ferocity of a warrior who delivers crushing blows with massive hammers, or the destructive power of a wizard who skillfully uses two wands and grimoires. The availability of two separate loadouts invites us to develop a pair of unique skill sets that can be swapped at will. Already, I find myself brainstorming strategies or contemplating my character’s future development.

If you’re not satisfied with your current development, you have the option to spend a small amount to start anew and reassign your skills or attributes.

The adventure begins in a straightforward manner as you gather tools like an axe, sword, wand, book, and assorted trinkets. You find yourself engaged in a fight against a band of lizards that are manageable but not without challenge. Strategy is crucial in this combat, with the need to strike from strategic positions while also utilizing blocks, evasive maneuvers, and parries to dodge potential lethal attacks. At times, it becomes challenging due to the scarcity of health restoratives like potions and healing items.

The thrill of executing a spot-on sword swipe and witnessing an enemy soar through the air after being defeated is both amazing and often amusing. This game offers a realistic fantasy journey for the most part, with a vividly vibrant fungal backdrop, but its mechanics primarily encourage players to orchestrate their own chaos. In many ways, it brings to mind Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, an imperfect yet incredibly enjoyable game by Arkane Studios, where you can send foes tumbling from ledges, into traps, and eliminate them in the most creative manners. Similar to Avowed, it delivers a unique blend of eccentricity and fulfillment.

Now All It Needs Is A Dedicated Kick Button

One standout feature in Dark Messiah Might & Magic that leaves a lasting impression is the special kick button, enabling effortless and brutal throws of enemies across the environment, resulting in a variety of exhilarating, gruesome deaths. The sheer enjoyment and absurdity of this mechanic had fans ecstatic when Arkane Studios hinted at its return in Deathloop. Another game boasting an array of strategic combat possibilities, but ultimately delivering endless entertainment regardless of your chosen path, is equally enjoyable and fulfilling.

This game doesn’t pack quite the same punch, but it offers equally absurd possibilities if I develop my character correctly. The intriguing aspect is that regardless of the path I choose on the skill tree, I can become a formidable character who carries a gun in one hand and a magical wand in the other – a concept I don’t believe has been explored before. It allows me to embody a goofy, violent, gun-slinging wizard who moves effortlessly, and as long as this aspect continues to evolve, I’m looking forward to enjoying this game.
