Freshly published reviews for Avowed are predominantly favorable, indicating a robust starting point as evidenced by its “Strong” rating on OpenCritic.
2025 promises to be an extraordinary year for gaming enthusiasts like me, with Xbox taking center stage among all platforms. It seems they’ve been working tirelessly to build a robust collection of exclusive games (though we may need to redefine what ‘first-party’ means in today’s industry). Titles like South of Midnight, Fable, and Doom: The Dark Ages are just a glimpse into their impressive lineup for the year. I can hardly wait!
2022 marks a significant year for Xbox, and leading the charge is Avowed, developed by Obsidian Entertainment – a title initially unveiled in 2020 during the Xbox Summer showcase. Since then, Avowed has undergone numerous adjustments; however, its release date is now set for February 18th, coming up next week. Prior to that, reviews for the game have been published.
Avowed Is Getting Mostly Positive Reviews
To date, Avowed appears to be getting generally favorable feedback, with a “Strong” rating of 83 on OpenCritic and an 80 on Metacritic. The majority of reviews seem to fall around eight out of ten, but some have gone higher or lower, slightly affecting the overall score.
Let’s start off with top-mob.com‘s review of Avowed, which comes from our Editor-In-Chief Stacey Henley. Stacey wasn’t as fond of Avowed as most seem to be and gave it a 3/5, noting that the game feels shallow and “unfinished”, but with entertaining combat that strikes a good balance between guns, swords, and magic.
In a contrasting review, Screen Rant gave Avowed a higher rating of 4.5/5, appreciating its strong character development, exploration, and immersive world. However, they were less enthusiastic about the combat, suggesting it might be subjective. On the other hand, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) rated Avowed 4/5, admiring its excellent combat, dialogue, and world, but pointing out minor annoyances such as not being able to complete side quests efficiently.
Compared to these titles, the Metacritic scores for Xbox range from 56 for Redfall, 81 for Hellblade 2, 86 for Indiana Jones, all the way up to an unexpected 87 for Halo Infinite.
In other places, VG24/7 gave Avowed a flawless rating, praising it as a game that may not be groundbreaking, but excels in every aspect it aims for with panache. However, one of the less favorable reviews for Avowed comes from Radio Times, who found some aspects to be exceptional, but others left them feeling detached from the gaming experience.
