2025 saw the launch of Avowed, a game that took off like a rocket on Xbox, blowing away my preconceived notions and hooking me deep into its world. I can’t seem to get enough of the challenge it offers!
Xbox exclusives have often fallen short of expectations, even games like Starfield causing division among fans. However, Avowed seems to have turned things around – maybe it’s due to lowered anticipation after previous releases. Initially, I didn’t give much thought to Avowed, focusing instead on other upcoming games. But once I immersed myself in the journey across the Living Lands, I can confidently say I won’t be leaving anytime soon.
A world of wonder
The Living Lands is meticulously designed, brimming with intriguing landmarks concealing mysteries to unearth, additional tasks that’ll occupy your time, and personas contributing to the narrative’s depth.
I’m quite fond of Role-Playing Games (RPGs), and I love delving into every hidden corner to gather loot, as there seems to be plenty in the game “Avowed”. Some might have been surprised by the choice not to make the map an entirely open world, but it offers a smooth gaming experience that strongly resembles “Baldur’s Gate 3”.
Finding nothing more thrilling than scaling a cliff’s surface to discover a secret memento, and the soft tinkle that echoes when untouched riches are nearby sets your heart racing, prompting an exhaustive hunt for hidden treasures.
The surroundings fill me with profound wonder, and the vistas have left me surprised. At a crucial moment in the narrative, when my companions felt an intense need to go back to a town, I climbed up high, drinking in the view – even if that view was quite disheartening and caused distress. The beauty is equally striking during battle. It may be difficult to adjust at first, but eventually, I found myself moving smoothly with my reliable shield and axe, embodying Kratos-like determination as I destroyed spiders, skeletons, and irritating mushroom creatures who wouldn’t stop launching poison at me.
Looking for the perfect build
I greatly enjoy the flexibility of Avowed, as it allows for unlimited creativity in character development. If you wish to combine roles, such as being both a powerful Wizard capable of wielding a massive two-handed axe for attacks, or a ranged combatant who can also utilize spells for healing yourself and allies, it’s all possible!
I’ve adopted a Fighter playstyle primarily, but I’ve incorporated some passive skills from the Ranger class to enhance my critical strike rate and other features. My preferred ability is “Built to Destroy”, which rewards healing for any item destroyed, piling it onto your maximum health if you’re already at full capacity.
This “layering” of health and recovery boosts is quite beneficial, as it allows you to stockpile lots of healing items before a major battle, providing you with a steady stream of self-healing. When combined with other healing abilities, it truly turns you into a formidable adversary.
I’m equally thrilled that sprinting doesn’t require any stamina. While it might not mirror real-life running where I need to catch my breath after long distances, given all there is to discover, it’s refreshing not to have to worry about those minor details slowing me down.
This setup results in an engaging gaming experience, allowing for flexible customization where you can adjust elements according to your preference, avoiding the monotony that can arise from too much freedom, a common issue found in certain role-playing games.
Minor frustrations
Avowed has its challenges, with the main issue being complexity. If your equipment isn’t up to the mark for a battle you’re engaged in, it becomes apparent through remarks from your teammates and the heavy damage you sustain from each hit. Typically, this can be addressed by just swapping gear and completing side missions to gather resources to enhance your equipment. Yet, occasionally, you might get stuck in an area without fast travel options, leading to a prolonged journey out of that location.
Delving into side quests and open-ended exploration significantly enhances the gaming experience. For individuals such as myself who favor immersive worlds, this is indeed an attractive feature. However, it might not hold the same allure for those seeking a casual or quick-play game option.
Acquiring equipment often proves equally challenging because money can be scarce. It seems I seldom possess enough to procure superior items, while discarding the existing gear for resources doesn’t always suffice to enhance what I currently own.
I haven’t found a better method yet, but perhaps there is one out there. Still, I’m happy with the weapons I have, so it seems like my search for upgrades will continue indefinitely.
Worth a shot
I must admit, I’m quite taken with Avowed. It has left an indelible mark on me, and I eagerly anticipate the potential growth of the Living Lands in the coming days. Kudos to Obsidian Games for crafting a potential powerhouse franchise for Xbox. Despite the shift in strategy from the company, there’s a possibility that PlayStation players might also get a chance to experience this title in the future.
It’s unclear to me how this affects Xbox as a gaming platform in the future, but since Avowed is included with a Game Pass membership, it seems like a great opportunity to try it out. I assure you, you won’t be left feeling let down.
