Ayo Edebiri Slams Elon Musk Over Pirates Reboot Rumors and Online Harassment!

Ayo Edebiri spoke out about the abusive online comments she received following a false rumor spread by Elon Musk regarding her casting in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. In March 2025, the Emmy-winning actress from The Bear took to Instagram Stories to address a February 2024 story that falsely suggested she would replace Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Musk had posted this misinformation on his X platform along with the remark “Disney sucks,” which sparked a barrage of online harassment against Edebiri. The actress clarified that neither she nor Disney had approached her for any role in the franchise and was taken aback by the false report, which led to the harassment she experienced.

“Reminiscing about when I received some of the craziest death threats and racial slurs ever (I’m not sure if it’s number one, but definitely top 3) due to a fictitious reboot of a movie I knew nothing about because of this man,” Edebiri wrote in her Instagram post while sharing Musk’s original message. “LMAO, so he’s not only a racist bigot, but also an idiot. But anyway. Life is, of course, a gift,” she added, referencing the controversy surrounding Musk’s controversial gestures at Donald Trump’s inauguration event, which many perceived as Nazi salutes.

Before delving into her own personal story, Edebiri initially discussed comedian Bill Burr’s critique of Musk from a recent interview. Later, when a fan proposed that she might be suitable for a Pirates role despite the uproar, the actress humorously replied, “Hold on, not DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), but I’ve had a change of heart. Maybe we could make some money. Let me know.

What’s Actually Happening with the Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise?

The Pirates of the Caribbean series is currently being revived with various possibilities under consideration since Johnny Depp last played Jack Sparrow in 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in late 2024 that Jeff Nathanson has written a third act for a reboot script, which Bruckheimer called “amazing.” However, the first and second acts still need further work. Disney is reportedly working on two different scripts at once – one possibly featuring Depp’s return, and another without his character. This approach of developing multiple scripts simultaneously was adopted following previous unsuccessful efforts to reboot the franchise, such as a female-led version starring Margot Robbie that didn’t make it to production.

As a diehard fan of Pirates of the Caribbean, I’ve always held a soft spot for Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Jerry Bruckheimer himself has openly expressed his desire to have him back on board, saying “It’s a reboot, but if it was my call, he would be there.” Yet, Disney executives seem to be keeping their cards close to their chest regarding Depp’s potential return, given his recent legal troubles. The Pirates series, with its impressive $4.5 billion earnings worldwide, stands as one of Disney’s most lucrative live-action franchises. And let’s not forget that Depp’s exceptional portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), even earned him an Oscar nod.

Despite encountering unexpected hostility, Edebiri’s career is thriving. Her horror film “Opus” debuts in cinemas on March 14, signifying her first leading role for A24. The actress just clinched her first Emmy for her portrayal of Sydney Adamu in FX’s “The Bear,” and production on its fourth season starts next month. Furthermore, she is involved in a live-action “Barney” film under development by Daniel Kaluuya’s production company, with shooting scheduled to commence in early 2026.
