Babes – REVIEW

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I must say that Babes is a refreshing breath of fresh air amidst the sea of predictable narratives. Coming from someone who’s witnessed the rise and fall (and sometimes rise again) of female friendships on the silver screen, this film truly captures the essence of camaraderie, support, and the occasional gross-out humor that life throws our way.

As a longtime fan of comedies that celebrate female friendships, I was thrilled to watch “Babes” this past weekend. Having grown up watching “Mean Girls,” it was refreshing to see a film that showcases the strength and bond between two women, rather than their cruelty towards each other.

After Eden leaves the hospital following her baby’s birth, she meets Claude (Stephen James), an actor who had just wrapped up a minor role in a Scorsese movie. A sudden romance ensues between them, but things take an awkward turn when Claude disappears without explanation, not as a joke, but for real. This leaves both Eden and Dawn questioning the future of their friendship.

The humor in this movie often revolves around bodily functions, ranging from awkward to unsettling, covering topics such as lactating, urinating children, simultaneous childbirth and defecation. While some scenes might provoke a chuckle, many do not, and several seem to lack a satisfying conclusion – for instance, a massage scene where they visit a spa ends rather anticlimactically. Oliver Platt, who hasn’t been seen on the big screen much lately, makes a brief appearance, and Sandra Bernhard, another infrequent screen presence, delivers an unmemorable role. The movie struggles to find the right balance between humor and gross-out moments, but at its core is the strong bond of friendship between women, supporting each other in times of need, which is the film’s true strength. In my opinion, a director like Paul Feig, who excels in female comedy ensembles, could have brought out this aspect even more effectively.
