At last, we’ve received additional information about the PS5-exclusive title from Devolver Digital, titled Baby Steps.
This peculiar game is essentially a journey simulator, allowing you to guide a 35-year-old idle character named Nate through it. In this game, Nate finds himself in an unusual world and must relearn how to walk. Originally announced in 2023, it’s set to be released later this year.
Fresh hands-on sneak peeks have popped up online lately, and a few sparse updates have further stoked our anticipation for this peculiar adventure.
In this game, you have direct command over Nate’s legs and feet. You lift his left and right legs using the corresponding buttons, and as you release these triggers, you guide them into place. The left stick is used to adjust Nate’s balance, similar to the deliberately challenging gameplay style of Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, who just so happens to be involved in this project’s development.
In Baby Steps, you embark on an expansive, open-world adventure. Initially, you’ll learn the ropes in a cave tutorial, then set off into the vastness, with a distant mountain peak as your goal. As you traverse this world, it appears that players have the freedom to delve into the environment at their leisure, gradually making their way towards the summit.
Exploring the world offers a multitude of paths to conquer, intriguing sights to see, people to encounter, and treasures to uncover.
In Baby Steps, there are no predefined routes, instant teleportation, or designated checkpoints for you to follow. Instead, your journey is entirely self-directed, with no specific paths being correct or incorrect. Additionally, it appears that the protagonist, Nate, cannot die, despite frequently falling during his adventures.
The PS Blog discusses an intriguing aspect of the game, which is its DualSense integration that employs tactile feedback to simulate the textures Nate traverses.
Throughout the game, you’ll encounter various non-player characters (NPCs) for engaging interactions and scenes, often involving seemingly spontaneous, irrational dialogues. Additionally, the audio environment adjusts dynamically based on your actions, offering a procedurally generated soundscape.
2025 is when we can personally explore it on PS5, and I’m curious about your thoughts on “Baby Steps”. Feel free to share them in the comments section beneath this post.
