As someone who grew up watching the Back to the Future trilogy multiple times and even managed to catch the musical adaptation when it graced the Broadway stage, I must admit that Robert Zemeckis’ recent revelation has me both excited and apprehensive.

Robert Zemeckis is moving on from Back to the Future. For years, this filmmaker has maintained that there will be no fourth installment, reboot, or remake of the 1985 time-traveling comedy he created with Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. However, in a recent interview, Zemeckis expressed an interest in revitalizing the franchise – by transitioning Back to the Future: The Musical from the stage to the silver screen.

As a musical enthusiast and filmmaker, I’ve been dreaming about bringing “Back to the Future: The Musical” to life, just like Mel Brooks did with “The Producers.” It’s an idea that excites me greatly, and I believe it would be fantastic. I even pitched this concept to Universal, but unfortunately, they haven’t quite grasped the vision yet. So for now, my hands are tied.

Robert Zemeckis humorously mentioned that the studio behind the Back to the Future trilogy (released from 1985 to 1990) inquires about a sequel or reboot of the series approximately every six months. However, he explained this request as an overstatement, stating that Universal executives more accurately question him: “Isn’t there something we can develop here? Isn’t there anything we can create?

Zemeckis stated, “You understand, we can only express that there are various possibilities. In other words, it’s possible but not likely. As for remaking the movie or hinting at a Back to the Future 4, I’m afraid that’s not in the picture.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement as I reflect on the incredible journey of “Back to the Future: The Musical” since its Tony Award-nominated debut in 2020. From gracing the stages of London’s West End and Broadway in New York City, it has left audiences spellbound everywhere it goes. The current North American tour is set to wrap up in summer 2025, with Japan being the next lucky destination where this timeless musical will continue to enchant audiences.

Drawing inspiration from the 1985 film, co-written by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, this musical version has a script penned by Gale himself. The music is composed by Alan Silvestri, who worked on all three films in the trilogy, while the lyrics are provided by six-time Grammy winner Glen Ballard.

In 2015, during the 30th anniversary celebration of the 1985 original film, director Robert Zemeckis stated that a remake of “Back to the Future” won’t occur until himself and co-writer Bob Gale have passed away.

Previously, Gale made it clear that Universal Studios cannot create a sequel or remake of the trilogy without the involvement of Zemeckis and himself, as they expressed in 2008. In their own words, “We’re very proud of the trilogy just as it is, so we prefer to keep it that way.” Gale added that although Universal might be interested in another installment, he believes a fourth film would not meet the high standards set by the first three. Consequently, they have decided to leave the series untouched.
