Backyard Sports Franchise Announces Revival

As a 90s and early 2000s kid, the news of Backyard Sports‘ revival has me feeling like I just stepped onto my old neighborhood’s baseball diamond again! The memories that game brought me are immeasurable – from those endless afternoons of virtual competition with friends to the joy of seeing my favorite sports stars in a whole new light.

90s and early 2000s sports enthusiasts will fondly remember the Backyard Sports series by Humongous Entertainment as a beloved staple in their gaming experience. Over time, this long-lasting series transformed playground sports into an enjoyable family-oriented gaming sensation, even incorporating kid versions of well-known professional athletes from various leagues like MLB, NFL, NBA, and MLS. However, the series’ progress halted when Humongous Entertainment studio shut down in 2005. Since then, it has seen some less successful releases as ownership changed hands. Now, Playground Productions has announced that they are working on reviving the franchise, with plans to release Backyard Sports again in the upcoming months.

Playground Productions has ambitious plans for the revival of their Backyard Sports series. While they’re not revealing specific details just yet, they hint that this nostalgic re-launch aims to captivate both old and new fans by enhancing the classic games in ways that are bigger and better than before, while still preserving the essence that made the franchise so unique and endearing.

It remains uncertain which Backyard Sports games will be resurfaced, but it seems reasonable to expect they’ll start with the originals – Backyard Baseball and Backyard Soccer. Playground Productions might eventually bring out other games in the series, but obtaining necessary licenses for players and leagues could make these titles more challenging to revive. However, it’s important to remember that Playground’s intentions aren’t confined solely to re-releases. The teaser trailer hints at baseball, suggesting the team may focus on that sport initially, although this is all speculation for now.

Playground Productions aims to kick off a wider strategy to rejuvenate the Backyard Sports brand across various domains such as video games, merchandise, movies, TV shows, and beyond. Previously, there were whispers about a potential film in the Backyard Sports series back in 2016, when Cross Creek Pictures and Crystal City Entertainment were rumored to be working on a movie project. It’s uncertain if this is the same initiative, but Playground has certainly got big dreams for the future of Backyard Sports.

It appears we won’t have to wait much longer to discover what Playground Productions is working on, fingers crossed they’ll include former NFL star Jason Kelce when they tackle the football aspect of their series. Given his recent interest in acquiring Backyard Sports rights, it seems sensible for the developers to collaborate with him on this project.
