Currently, it’s tough to envision any actor other than Chris Evans portraying Steve Rogers (a.k.a Captain America) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, back in the early 2000s, Evans had to compete with other hopefuls for the role. Notable contenders included Scott Porter, who is well-known for his work on “Friday Night Lights.” More recently, Porter reminisced about his audition and candidly discussed his feelings about losing the part to Evans. From his account, it was a tough pill to swallow.
Scott Porter has built a strong acting career, appearing in numerous TV series and films. However, not getting the chance to portray the head of Earth’s strongest heroes was a significant disappointment at the time. During his interview on Watch What Happens Live, hosted by Andy Cohen, listeners hung on every word as Porter, best known for his role in Ginny & Georgia, shared his memories. Reflecting back, he remembered being among the final four candidates and admitted, in a TikTok clip, that he let the excitement surrounding him get the better of him prematurely.
Indeed, you mentioned an emotional blow earlier, and that was more like a crushing disappointment. It left me reeling, on the brink of tears and struggling to breathe – it was quite harsh. This is partly due to the fact that various media outlets had portrayed my likeness on Captain America’s body, leading me to believe I could accomplish this task. But alas, I realized too late that such a notion was unattainable for me.

Steve Rogers often endures numerous blows, yet it’s doubtful that the comic book character ever experienced the pain of losing an acting job to someone else. It’s easy to sympathize with Scott Porter, as his desire to portray the MCU’s Shield-wielding hero is relatable. However, although he had a passionate outburst in the past, Porter now maintains a calm and rational perspective on not getting the role: He accepts that it went to someone else and moves forward with grace.
There’s no doubt in my mind that anyone but Chris Evans could have played Captain America. I didn’t feel an ounce of annoyance while watching all the Avengers films. As a die-hard fan, I must say he did an exceptional job portraying the character.

32 Thoughts From The Steve Rogers Era Of Captain America
In an interview, Scott Porter revealed that along with him, Wilson Bethel from “Hart of Dixie” and Mike Vogel (known for shows like “Under the Dome” and “Sex/Life”) were among the last four actors considered for a role. Interestingly, Bethel had expressed regret about not getting the role he eventually landed as Bullseye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other well-known figures such as John Krasinski and comedian Dane Cook also auditioned for the part, but Krasinski decided against it upon seeing Chris Hemsworth in his Thor costume, while Cook later apologized to Marvel for his audition.
Despite some initial reservations about Chris Evans for the part, given his past as Johnny Storm in the 2000s’ Fantastic Four movies, Evans proved to be an ideal fit as Steve Rogers across multiple MCU films from 2011 to 2019. His stellar performance has sparked interest among fans who hope to see him return in upcoming projects like Avengers: Doomsday and/or Secret Wars. However, Evans has previously denied rumors of a reprisal, although some fans are still hopeful.

Scott Porter should feel nothing but pride for making it as far as he did in the audition process. Moreover, it’s worth noting that Porter later lent his voice to valiant characters in animated series such as “Marvel Anime: X-Men”, “Ultimate Spider-Man”, and “Avengers Assemble”. Given his enthusiasm for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I suspect he would be thrilled if Chris Evans were to reprise his role as Captain America.
