As a seasoned viewer of many a gripping drama series, I must say that “Bad Sisters” has proven to be a captivating addition to my television rotation. The intricate plotlines, the complex characters, and the raw emotions on display are truly a testament to the skillful writing and acting involved in this production.
*Warning: Spoilers for Bad Sisters season 2 ahead*
Season 2 of Bad Sisters has been as gripping and complicated as season 1, leaving lots of unanswered questions ahead of the finale.
The eight-part series has followed the Garvey sisters as they investigate the tragic loss of their sister Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), who died in a fatal car crash at the end of episode two.
As Grace’s death drew near, she displayed unusual behavior: Her previously affectionate new spouse Ian (Owen McDonnell) mysteriously disappeared, she made large withdrawals from the bank, and she was tormented by the ghostly presence of her late abusive husband John Paul (Claes Bang), manifesting through their mutual accomplice Roger (Michael Smiley), as well as the police.
As the story unfolded, it became clear in this wickedly amusing drama that Ian was not as he appeared, Angelica (Fiona Shaw), despite her eccentricities, posed no threat to Grace, and they were all teetering on the brink of being accused of an attempted murder charge.
It’s also important to note that Ian not only deceived and slept with Eva (Sharon Horgan), but he additionally took Blánaid’s savings from Grace as well. With numerous threads left hanging in the finale, let me clarify the dark and emotional conclusion, which carries a heavy load of spoilers!
Bad Sisters season 2 ending explained
In a flashback, the events of Ian’s departure in episode 1 are told in more detail, with key new information. After Grace told Ian that she killed her husband, he looked horrified and left, and as he did she hit him on the back in frustration.
At the end of the show, viewers witness that Ian shoves her onto the floor, causing an injury to her arm. Overwhelmed by the realization that she’d married another vile creature, Grace collapses in disbelief and despair. Later on, Becka (Eve Hewson) uncovers Ian’s hidden phone in the restroom. Grace charges the device and dials the number – to her shock, a different woman answers – revealing that Ian’s true identity is Cormac.
As a devoted cinemagoer, I’d rephrase it like this: When he grabbed the phone, he threatened to expose her secret – that she had killed John Paul – unless it benefited him. So, he demanded she bring cash to the bar, stating he was owed something. Unbeknownst to us, Grace had already met with him – after stashing all the money among the tortoises – and confronted him for being a deceiver and a fraud.
In this scenario, Ian reveals his true nature. He openly acknowledges that Grace was merely a means to an end – a pawn to be used for financial gain, such as the money, the house, and all he believes he is entitled to. His attendance at the bereavement group appears to have been strategic, with the intention of blackmailing her.
As a passionate moviegoer, I’d put it like this: Threatening and spewing malicious words, I warn Grace that if she doesn’t fork over the cash, I’ll head to the cops. And sadly, my word might carry more weight with her daughter than hers.
In a decisive display of determination, Grace boldly reveals her character: she insists he keeps his distance from her kin, as he’s not eating and leaves abruptly. The timid, fearful Grace of old is now replaced by a confident woman, until a moment of panic over losing an earring belonging to her child leads to a tragic car accident.
Despite the unfortunate circumstances, it’s fair to say that Ian played a significant role in both putting her in the car and his own anxious drive home.
Currently, Eva arrives home to discover Ian present, accompanied by Blánaid (Saise Quinn), as he aims to clear up some matters with the Garvey sisters. Eva had previously messaged them asking to drop by.
Instead of Eva choosing not to heed him, an opportune situation arises where Eva (Eva Birthistle) skillfully drives Ian’s vehicle to take Blánaid to Molly’s for some pizza. This way, they can have a private and frank conversation without the risk of her being overheard.
Simultaneously, Houlihan (Thaddea Graham) discovers that Ian is in fact a disgraced police officer known as Cormac Sweeney with a record of harassment and abusive behaviour towards other women, including his wife. She tells her superior that he’s a “dangerous” man and she wants to go after him, only to be met with sexism and a threat of being “passed over” for every job in the future.
While the Garveys listen in horror as Ian confesses that his feelings for Grace were never genuine and he was only after the money, Becka tries to stop him but instead, he violently slams her head into the kitchen sink, leaving a visible injury on her eye, as seen in the flash-forward in episode 1.
To compound the situation, Angelica shows up on her bicycle and listens to Ian voicing contempt toward Grace with the words “how could anyone love a murdering lunatic.” Enraged herself, Angelica strikes Ian, causing him to stumble and fall, hitting his head in the process. As blood pours from his wound, Ian tumbles to the ground unconscious.
Currently, the sisters and Angelica find themselves entangled in another homicide. As they scramble to conceal a deceased individual in their kitchen, Houlihan knocks on the door. Unable to reach Ian, Houlihan is searching for him. In anticipation of Houlihan entering, the sisters transfer the body and secret it behind the couch.
In the evening, they choose to use Ian’s vehicle, place him inside the trunk, and hurl him into the sea. On their journey, Angelica encounters an unexpected roadblock when she finds Houlihan at Grace’s residence while attempting to dispose of Ian’s car.
Afterward, the scene transitions back to the beginning of season 2, where the cliffs edge is reminiscent of when the sisters had disposed of Ian’s body, presumed deceased. Yet, as they left him behind, he miraculously regained consciousness, gasping for air.
His sight is damaged from the head injury and, disorientated, he stumbles off the cliff.
Nevertheless, he ends up on a stone, enveloped in Becka’s towel that bears her name, as Bibi contemplates pushing him off. Instead, she nearly tumbles down herself before her siblings manage to pull her up again.
Turning to Eva, the family’s leader, the sisters seek her guidance on their next step. Eva responds by suggesting that they call the police immediately to bring an end to this situation.
Becka asserts that they are not killers, whereas Eva secretly calls the authorities to report witnessing someone fall off a cliff.
Upon their return home the following morning, Angelica, overcome with remorse, admits her wrongdoings and humbly asks for pardon, as it turns out Houlihan is still alive when they examine his boot.
The Garvey sisters are furious because Houlihan is aware of Ian’s real identity as Cormac. This information angers them even more when Ursula discloses that Grace perished while attempting to escape Ian, and they imply that “his companion” concealed this truth.
Eva wonders why they didn’t apprehend Angelica earlier instead of waiting for her return, but Houlihan insists she isn’t concealing criminal activity within the force, despite her partner concealing evidence. The sisters argue that they’ve already paid their price since Grace is no more, and all that remains is Cormac.
Amidst the seriousness, there are also lighter instances, yet what truly matters is ensuring justice prevails. Houlihan seeks assistance from Fergal Loftus, a former mentor of hers who’s now retired, to pay a visit to Cormac in the hospital and challenge him.
Although Cormac advises her to file charges against the Garveys due to their attempted murder of him, they propose a different solution instead. However, it’s important to note that he is the one facing numerous legal issues, such as fraud, embezzlement, bigamy, spousal abuse, and being dismissed from the force.
Loftus argues that the Garvey sisters could have achieved success if they had attempted to kill him, before he threatens to conceal evidence and refute any statement he makes. Additionally, Houlihan has connections within the PSNI – his former department – and advises him to return the money to the Garveys. They ultimately decide to label it as an accident and a miracle instead.
Loftus praises his ex-partner for leaving the force due to its rampant corruption and sexism. Yet, he urges her to reconsider, stating that the situation would worsen if a dedicated officer like her wasn’t around, making it even more “shattered” without her presence.
As everything is resolved, there’s one last goodbye to settle.
In this touching finale, Becka carrying her newborn, along with Joe, expectant Nora, and Blánaid, bid a tearful goodbye to Grace. As a poignant montage unfolds, showcasing their shared history and Grace’s own life story, they scatter her ashes out over the sea, blowing kisses and saying heartfelt goodbyes to their cherished sister.
