Season 1 spoilers ahead.
Bad Sisters, the deliciously dark Dublin-based comedy, is back – and better than ever.
The initial season of the TV show “Clan” from Belgium focused on the Garvey sisters: Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), Eva (Sharon Horgan), Bibi (Sarah Greene), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), and Becka (Eve Hewson). They were involved in a plot to eliminate Grace’s abusive spouse, John Paul, whom they called “The Jerk”. This season was filled with intense action.
Over the course of ten episodes, attempts were made unsuccessfully to take his life. In the final episode, it was disclosed that it was his wife, Grace, who had choked him to death using his own pajama pants and orchestrated a complex ruse, making it appear as an accidental death.
In the second season, we find ourselves two years later, and the Garvey sisters, except for Grace, are hastily driving through the twisting landscapes of Ireland, trying to dispose of a corpse hidden in their vehicle. However, it’s important to note that despite the presence of unknown deceased individuals, things have taken a new turn now.
Eva has stopped drinking alcohol and is now working with a menopause advisor. Baby Becka has grown up and established a long-term relationship. Bibi and Nora (Yasmine Akram) are planning to use an egg donor for another child. Ursula is divorced and continues to smuggle pills from work, while Grace has gained self-assurance and is preparing for another wedding.
Clad in red, Grace is no longer the timid, apprehensive version of herself from season 1. Instead, she’s joyously participating in her bachelorette party with her sisters at the horse races. By chance, they encounter Grace’s former neighbor Roger – the one who assisted Grace in moving her late husband’s body – and his sister Angelica (Fiona Shaw), to whom Grace expresses her regret for not maintaining contact.
Even as they prepare for their wedding, the Garvey family’s shady history resurfaces, with a decaying corpse discovered in a suitcase at the lake of John Paul’s former residence, his ancestral home.
Detective Inspector Fergal Loftus, portrayed by Barry Ward, is tasked with examining the deceased – a fact that might remind viewers of George, John Paul’s father – thus reopening old scars related to his untimely demise.
Initially, I found myself dismissing the relentless theories of the Claffin brothers, Tom and Matt, about Grace potentially being linked to John Paul’s demise. However, as events unfolded, I couldn’t help but wish I had given their suspicions a second thought.
Additionally, Loftus is accompanied by a fresh recruit, Houlihan (portrayed by Thaddea Graham), a 25-year-old eager detective who forms a hilarious duo with Loftus and serves as a replacement for the constant bickering of the Claffin brothers.
In the story, as the police start questioning the Garveys once more, Eva escorts Grace to marry Ian (Owen McDonnell), whom she encountered at a support group for grief, in the garden of their ancestral home. Everything appears to be a joyful fresh start; however, an ominous feeling lingers that trouble may be on the horizon.
Roger observes the cheerful duo, constantly serving himself beverages, and even steps in for a dance with Grace. For a moment, he’s taken back to less complicated periods, but Roger confesses that he carries a heavy load of guilt over their actions concerning John Paul’s demise.
At first, Grace remains composed, but following the police’s arrival to inform her of George’s discovery in the lake, they start probing questions about John Paul’s life insurance policy – a claim she had not made yet.
In the middle of an interrogation, Ian unexpectedly enters, causing Grace’s two lives to intersect. The situation becomes even more complicated after a late-night visit from Roger, who is distraught and wants to inform the police about his desire to confess. In a state of distress, Grace shares with her newlywed husband that John Paul had abused her and raped her sister Eva, and, what’s worse, she admits to having killed him.
Overwhelmed, I found myself stepping away from the theater last night, leaving behind a tale that had left me in a state of shock. As dawn broke this morning, my friend Blanaid sprinted along the sandy beach to share the news with Eva and me – it seemed that our protagonist, Ian, had walked out without a word, and his departure left Grace in a state of unrelenting sorrow, refusing to disclose the circumstances surrounding his sudden exit.
In this setting, blood continues to symbolize the deepest form of love and shelter; however, it is Angelica who stirs unease among the Garveys. She carries an air of arrogance, which can be likened to that of an obnoxious character, and soon becomes a shared adversary for the Garveys as they grapple with the repercussions of what was intended to be a joyful fresh start.
A deeply religious individual proposes a method for Garvey women and her brother Roger to alleviate their feelings of guilt, simultaneously using this as a tool against them – it’s somewhat ambiguous if she aims to break the bond between the sisters or if she’s envious of them and yearns for acceptance among them.
Shaw is certainly an excellent new member this season, and all the novelties bring a refreshing change. Both Houlihan and Joe, Becka’s partner, add some welcome humor to the show when it gets intense, as they aren’t privy to the Garvey family’s major secrets.
In the second season, it showcases the strengths of Bad Sisters exceptionally well: it blends the most exuberant delight of living with its darkest instances.
Compared to the initial season, it adopts a more serious and thoughtful tone, yet maintains its intensity, complexity, and shock value. This will leave viewers constantly wondering what’s going to happen next.
Without a doubt, Bad Sisters possesses an extraordinary knack for tugging at your heartstrings and leaving you in stitches, whether you mean to laugh or not.
