Bad Sisters stars react to season 2 death: ‘I just think it’s brilliant’

As a lifelong aficionado of gripping television dramas, I must say that the twist in Bad Sisters has truly caught my attention. The decision to kill off Grace Garvey, portrayed by the exceptional Anne-Marie Duff, is nothing short of brilliant. It’s not every day that a show’s writing manages to shock me so profoundly, yet here we are.

Major spoilers ahead.

Actress Anne-Marie Duff, who plays Grace Garvey on the show “Bad Sisters”, considers the choice to write off her character as “genius”.

As a cinephile, I had already figured out that her character’s fate would not be a happy one. But let me tell you, the clever twist in the plot just blew my mind!

The situation surrounding Grace’s fate and future was filled with excitement and uncertainty. However, Sharon Horgan has unexpectedly added a significant twist to the plot, which means the original plan is no longer in play. This opens up endless possibilities for what might happen next. It feels quite freeing, I believe.

Sarah Greene, playing Bibi, mentioned that they, the cast, were aware Duff was only available for a limited period due to her being engaged in another job commitment.

She continued, “I hadn’t anticipated how events would unfold until we received the initial pair of scripts. Frankly, I was taken aback. However, I believe it sets an excellent foundation for where the narrative develops next.

Horgan, who both writes and stars in the series as Eva Garvey, echoed those comments.

By episode 2, it becomes clear that the police are also closing in on the sisters, forcing them to safeguard Blanaid while looking out for themselves.

I believe each tale influences the other, and I’m optimistic that this connection will captivate readers to such an extent that they might not hold a grudge about Grace’s demise for a prolonged period.

Big deaths also “tend to happen in every great show”, added Eva Birthistle (Ursula Garvey).

They suffer a significant and crucial loss, which actually contributes positively to the series. However, let’s not forget, it’s a profound sorrow they endure.

In her statement, Director and Executive Producer Dearbhla Walsh expressed hope and faith that despite the heartbreaking turn of events, the audience will appreciate the series, admire Sharon’s writing, and cherish the portrayal of the sisters.

She stated, ‘It’s understandable to feel angry when someone you cherish is taken from you, as such experiences often become integral parts of our personal narratives, reflecting the authenticity of life.’

But despite Grace’s absence in the remaining episodes, “she’s still there, the spirit”, said Duff.

She shared this observation about Grace: I felt quite distant from the other sisters during the first season, but upon rewatching, it seemed as though they were constantly discussing her. This made it feel like Grace was always present among them.

It seems like it’s happening once more in season 2, despite my absence. They keep bringing up her name.

Season 2 picks up two years after the “accidental” death of Grace’s abusive husband John Paul.

The tightly bonded Garvey sisters might have moved forward, but when long-buried facts reemerge, these women find themselves back in the limelight, with suspicion running rampant, falsehoods spoken, secrets unveiled, and the sisters compelled to determine who they can rely on.

In addition to Shaw, actors such as Owen McDonnell from shows like “Killing Eve” and “True Detective: Night Country,” and Thaddea Graham known for her roles in “Sex Education” and “The Irregulars,” have also been added to the cast.

Here are the characters who reappear: Michael Smiley as Roger Muldoon, Daryl McCormack portraying Matthew Claffin, Saise Quinn in the role of Blanaid Williams, Barry Ward as Fergal Loftus, Yasmine Akram playing Nora Garvey, and Jonjo O’Neill appearing as Donal Flynn.
