At the 2025 BAFTA TV Awards, Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell’s waltz to “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on Strictly Come Dancing was named the winner of the Memorable Moment Award.
The award in question is the unique BAFTA that’s decided by public vote, with other nominees encompassing the emotional carriage scene from Bridgerton Season 3 and the poignant moment in Gavin & Stacey finale where Smithy sought Mick’s advice on whether to propose to Sonia.
However, it was Chris and Dianne’s waltz that struck a chord with the majority of voters, leading Dianne to grace the stage to receive the accolade in their name.
During the press conference following her victory, she expressed that the win held significant meaning for Chris. Since it was Liverpool’s anthem and knowing his fondness for ballroom-style dancing, she felt compelled to create a truly exceptional dance routine.
Moreover, she disclosed that upon hearing her proposal, he initially dismissed it as rather outdated or tacky. However, through her persuasive efforts, he ultimately agreed to try it out.
In their initial performance, Buswell mentioned that he had a small tear in his eye and expressed, “You were correct, it was incredibly emotional for me.” Needless to say, I am overjoyed that he resonated with the emotion conveyed through that dance.
Truthfully, we sobbed throughout – at the beginning, during the middle, and at the close, as the dance held such deep significance for us.
When asked about her strategy for surpassing last year’s achievements, she replied: “I am frequently posed this query, and I must admit it will be quite challenging to surpass what we accomplished before. However, I approach each series with the same mindset every year, which is to provide my celebrity with an exceptional experience, teach them as effectively as possible, and ultimately, the outcome largely depends on factors beyond our control.
Last year, I was thrilled to be part of the triumphant duo, Chris and Dianne, who clinched the title on Strictly Come Dancing. We emerged victorious against formidable competitors like JB Gill and Lauren Oakley, Sarah Hadland and Vito Coppola, and Tasha Ghouri and Aljaž Škorjanec in a closely contested final.
In response to their victory, Chris expressed his amazement, stating, “I’m speechless. I truly didn’t expect to last this long. Admittedly, I believed I might be eliminated in the first week, and I know nobody gets eliminated in the first week, but honestly, I thought I would.
“But we just lasted and lasted.”
