This year’s nominees for the EE Rising Star Award at the British Academy Film Awards have been revealed, featuring David Jonsson and Marisa Abela as part of the talented group selected this time around.
20 years old, the nominees were announced at The Savoy Hotel in London prior to the EE British Academy Film Awards 2025, happening at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, 16th February.
This year’s lineup additionally features Mikey Madison, Jharrel Jerome, and Nabhaan Rizwan, each of whom has left audiences spellbound with their performances in the successful films Anora, Unstoppable, and In Camera respectively.

Lately, David Jonsson has been winning over crowds with his portrayal of Andy in Alien: Romulus, and he’s now been nominated for an award, sharing the nomination list with his former co-star from Industry, Marisa Abela, who played Amy Winehouse in the biopic Back to Black.
At the BAFTA Film Awards, the Rising Star Award is the unique category where winners are chosen by public vote. Currently, voting for this prestigious award is accessible on the BAFTA website.
Before unveiling the EE Rising Star Award, named after the late Mary Selway – an innovative casting director known for her tireless efforts in nurturing and showcasing talent, said BAFTA’s CEO, Jane Millichip.
The spirit of Mary continues through this honor, as it acknowledges twenty years of dedication to nurturing emerging talents, emphasizing the impactful role of storytelling, imagination, and ingenuity in cinema. This year’s nominees are five exceptionally talented individuals, whose creations have already resonated with audiences globally.
On Sunday, 16th February, viewers have the opportunity to witness the announcement of the winner during the live broadcast of the awards show, which is being hosted by the renowned actor David Tennant (known for his roles in Doctor Who and Rivals). The event will air in its entirety on BBC One.
Notable recipients of the Rising Star Award have been James McAvoy, Eva Green, Juno Temple, Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart, Jack O’Connell, Will Poulter, John Boyega, Tom Holland, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Micheal Ward, Bukky Bakray, Lashana Lynch, and Emma Mackey in the past.
This year, some of the contenders for the EE Rising Star Award have been announced, preceding the release of the longlist for the BAFTA Film Awards. Notably, Emilia Pérez has earned a total of 15 nominations and appears to be in the front-runners.
The intriguing novel “Conclave” has garnered 14 nominations, with other notable contenders on the list being “Anora”, “The Apprentice”, “The Brutalist”, “A Complete Unknown”, “Dune: Part Two”, “Kneecap”, “The Substance”, and “Wicked”.
