This year at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) Awards held in San Francisco, California, it was Balatro, the popular roguelike card game, that stole the show and took home the top prizes.
In February 2024, LocalThunk’s independently developed game saw its launch on both PC and consoles to great acclaim.
At the GDC Awards ceremony, the game was honored with accolades for Best Debut, Best Design, Innovation, and was also named Game of the Year.
In this instance, Astro Bot once again stands out as a top contender for awards, and it’s evident here as well: Sony’s exceptional platformer bagged two awards – one for the Best Audio category and another for Best Technology.
In other news, the title “Best Narrative” was given to “ReFantazio” in the Metaphor category, while “Black Myth: Wukong” took home the award for ‘Best Visual Art.’ Meanwhile, “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” received the honor of the Audience Award.

This year, it’s expected that the game Balatro will undergo a significant gameplay overhaul, while also offering periodic, complimentary updates featuring cosmetic items inspired by various other gaming titles.
Despite garnering widespread praise and achieving significant success, the game hasn’t been without its challenges. For instance, an anomalously high European age rating was rectified not too long ago, and there have been discussions regarding the appropriate application of AI art in connection with Balatro, which the developer has had to address firmly.
