As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about the hype surrounding Balatro. After all, indie games can often be hit or miss, and the mobile market is notoriously tough to crack. But after giving it a spin on my trusty Android device, I was pleasantly surprised. The roguelike mechanics are addictive, the visuals are stunning, and the gameplay is tight as a drum.
It’s likely that Balatro has been one of the most notable indie sensations this year, receiving praise from both critics and audiences (with several nominations at The Game Awards) and selling well on conventional platforms.
Since September, both developer LocalThunk and publisher PlayStack have made the game available on iOS and Android devices. More recently, it appears that they’ve been generating a steady income from mobile platform sales.
According to a report from Pocketgamer.biz, the mobile game Balatro has generated approximately $4.4 million in revenue since its launch on iOS and Android in late September. In its initial week, the roguelike game raked in $1 million, with the first day’s earnings reaching $162,000 and the second day’s at $200,000. However, starting from October 3, the daily revenue began to decrease, and by the end of October, the average daily income was around $71,000.
According to the report, the game experienced an uptick in revenue from mobile platforms on November 18, reaching approximately $727,000 that day. Interestingly, this was also the day when the game was nominated for five awards at The Game Awards, including the Game of the Year category. It’s clear that these nominations led to a significant surge in sales, particularly on mobile devices.
Remember, Balatro doesn’t have any in-app purchases or microtransactions. Instead, it’s a game you buy upfront, which isn’t common among most popular mobile games these days.
Balatro is also available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
