Baldur’s Gate 3 Astarion and Karlach actors have different thoughts on revisiting their characters

As a devoted fan of Baldur’s Gate, I was utterly captivated by the interview with Neil Newbon and Samantha Béart at the Golden Joystick Awards 2024. Listening to their unique perspectives on returning to the franchise brought an exciting glimmer to my gaming heart.

During the Golden Joystick Awards 2024, we had a chance to chat with Neil Newbon and Samantha Béart, actors from Baldur’s Gate 3. They shared their perspectives upon revisiting the franchise, but much like their characters Astarion and Karlach, their opinions on the subject varied greatly.

If you’re curious, feel free to check out our video right here, or head over to the TopMob Gaming YouTube channel to listen to more of their conversation.

In simpler terms, when asked about possibly reprising the role of Astarion, Newbon said, “I’d jump at the chance if given the opportunity.

The stratospheric success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has meant that millions of fans have been able to share the same affinity Newbon has for Astarion. “I love the character,” he told us. “The character is incredibly meaningful for a lot of people but also for me as well. ”

Since Baldur’s Gate 3 developers Larian have ruled out additional content like DLC or sequels (though they continue to release significant updates), there’s a possibility that another studio might take over the franchise, potentially in an unexpected form, such as a different type of media rather than a game.

Newbon expressed that he’d be equally enthusiastic about resurrecting his character through various forms. In his words, “It would be fantastic to bring him back in a game, live-action, or animated format, and I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment.

Newbon – crossing his fingers – expressed his hope for a live-action adaptation. He added, “[Astarion] and I look very similar, so I think I can get away with it.”

In such situations, Newbon suggested we should maintain a certain nonchalance, responding with something like, “I’m not in too much of a hurry. Maybe I’ll ponder it for a bit.

However, Astarion’s charm was overpowering, leading Newbon to agree wholeheartedly: “Yes, certainly, definitely, yes.

Instead of Samantha Béart actively considering taking on the Karlach mantle again, she has a more relaxed attitude towards it. She mentioned, “I wouldn’t reject the idea, but it’s not something that consistently crosses my mind.

Beárt faced the camera to emphasize his point, saying, “This is actually not a topic that crosses my mind often.

Regarding Karlach, I must clarify that my absence isn’t due to indifference, but rather the inherent demands of my work. As Béart eloquently stated, “You understand, you do a job, you move on.” This sentiment is shared by many in the film industry, where characters often experience different conclusions, and this is simply part of the profession.

Béart knows that Karlach, no matter which ending players end up with, will never truly go away.

Moving ahead, Béart shared details of the projects they’ve been developing, starting with a sneak peek at “Cabernet,” an intriguing independent game centered around vampires.

Additionally, they discussed Loco Motive, a game launched on the same day as the Golden Joystick Awards. Beart likened it to “Murder on the Orient Express with a touch of LucasArts flair,” and expressed that it promises to be an exciting adventure.

Additionally, we ran into more than just Newbon and Béart during the time of the Golden Joysticks. We also had a chat with Ben Starr, the talented voice actor behind Final Fantasy 16’s Clive and this year’s host for the Golden Joysticks. So, don’t forget to catch that interview as well!
