In the upcoming Hunger Games prequel titled “Sunrise on the Reaping”, actor Tom Blyth who played young Coriolanus Snow in “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” will not reappear. This is because the storyline for this film takes place 45 years after his, making it impossible for him to return. During an interview with Variety, Blyth expressed his regret at not being part of the new movie, stating that he missed everyone involved and even joked about using advanced makeup techniques to appear older. However, director Francis Lawrence also shared his feelings of missing Blyth.
The Hunger Games series, penned by Suzanne Collins, has enchanted audiences for over a decade. This captivating franchise is set in the dystopian nation of Panem and follows Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) transformative journey, from volunteering to take her sister’s place in the arena to leading the uprising against the Capitol. Notably, two prequels, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Sunrise on the Reaping, have been written, delving into specific storylines. After Gary Ross’ direction of 2012’s The Hunger Games, Francis Lawrence has taken over as director for subsequent films, with plans to direct the 2026 prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping.
It’s not unexpected that Blyth and Zegler won’t appear in “Sunrise on the Reaping”, given that the upcoming prequel focuses on a completely new storyline with distinct characters. As the book hasn’t been published yet, we don’t know who else might be involved besides Haymitch. At present, details about the cast for “Sunrise on the Reaping” are being kept secret. Filming is scheduled to start later this year. It’s worth noting that Snow was serving as president of Panem during the 50th Hunger Games, or the Second Quarter Quell. Consequently, there’s a chance an older actor could be chosen to portray Snow, who would have been in his late 50s at that time.
Although it’s clear that the actors from “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” won’t appear in “Sunrise on the Reaping,” fans might feel let down by the slim chance they’ll reappear in the Hunger Games series. Since Lucy Gray, played by Zegler, vanished beyond District 12’s borders at the end of the first prequel, it seems likely that her open-ended fate will remain a mystery. Both Blyth and Zegler delivered exceptional performances in their roles, skillfully portraying Snow and Lucy Gray, making the characters leap off the pages and onto the screen with their charisma, boldness (Blyth), charm (Zegler), and musical talent.
Despite this, it’s difficult to accept that Collins has finished penning prequels for the Hunger Games series. If the esteemed author were to include President Snow during his younger years, fans can feel confident that Blyth would be eager to take on the role again if offered the opportunity on screen.
On November 20th, 2026, the movie adaptation of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping” will premiere in cinemas, two years after the book was published on March 18th, 2025.
