DePrince, born Mabinty in Sierra Leone in 1995, found herself at an orphanage when her parents died during the country’s prolonged civil war. By the age of 4, she was adopted by an American family who mourned deeply upon the ballet dancer’s demise and voiced their sorrow publicly.

She went on to say, “She was a source of inspiration for me. Whether it was bounding across the stage or jetting off to underdeveloped nations to teach dance to orphans and children, she was relentless in her pursuit of fulfilling her dreams in the arts and dance. Michaela (Mabinty) has left an indelible mark on countless stages around the world. She will be deeply missed. I adore you, my lovely Butterfly.

Deprince openly discussed the challenges she faced during her childhood spent in an orphanage. It was within this institution that she stumbled upon an abandoned magazine, which would eventually guide her towards a career as a professional ballet dancer.

In 2012, she shared with the BBC about a woman on the magazine cover, “She was standing on her tiptoes, adorned in a pink, enchanting tutu. It was an extraordinary sight – a costume sparkling with glitter, exuding beauty. To me, she embodied everything beautiful, hopeful, loving, and fulfilling that I lacked.

As she explained, she thought to herself, “‘Wow! This is what I want to be.'”
